In essence the little-known patterns and approaches I'm sharing can be used in all areas of your life to help you get more of what you want and less of what you don't.

A WARNING Now, if you think mind-control sounds unethical then I'd just like to say, what you do with these patterns is for you to decide. I urge you to have good intent, leave people in a better place than you found them in and always work towards win/win situations. I don't say this through any altruistic, tree hugging or saintly attitude. It simply makes sense. If you con, trick and force people against their will you will be caught out eventually. As a result you will lose credibility, trust and friendship.

Verbal Nitroglycerin!

This week I read half of Rintu Basu’s Persuasion Skills Black Book in one night. I said to myself, “Wow, this is incredible stuff! This is verbal nitroglycerin!” If your job entails debate and discussion, this book is for you. If you’re in sales, this book is an absolute must; you can forget all those How-to-Overcome-Obstacles-in-a-Sale books. If you want to utilize persuasion in your relationships, this book is for you. If you’re interested in NLP, this book is for you.

Rintu shows how to do persuasion patterns like Redefine (moving a conversation from one subject to another), Agreement (great for when you really don’t agree), and Pacing and Leading (making statements which are mutually believed to be true then making an important statement or question in which, after the previous “yes’s” from the person, they should also say “yes” to the important one). He also shows how the word “but” is bad, and the word “and” is good.

I purchased this book because I had bought Rintu’s other gem, Persuasion Skills Black Book of Job Hunting Techniques, a few weeks ago. In Job, you learn not only cutting edge techniques for a winning resume and job interview, you also learn confidence and attitude (which are massive elements needed in job searching.) I am considering a return to sales, and am returning to the singles’ world (thanks to divorce.) Thus, I became interested in relearning persuasion and learning more about NLP which I dabbled in in the mid 90s. I am very glad I bought both books!

The more you read this short, powerful book, the more you will realize it is very likely the best book ever written on persuasion. Imagine how great learning a fairly dry subject can be, when nearly each sentence in a chapter is itself an illustration the technique being taught, and how good it will feel when you notice that you feel comfortable using the material with just a little practice as a result. These techniques dramatically improved my results as a marketer, and helped me personally as well.

Excellent rune book. This is the 3rd or 4th different rune book I've gotten over the 25 years or so I've been reading runes. My last name is a rune and my ancestry is Nordic/Germanic so this is a passion of mine. I even have the whole runic alphabet plus a few bind runes tattooed into a design on my back. I got to see authentic ancient rune carvings in Sweden in 2010. This Nordic Runes book is an excellent mix of history and useful info for throwing readings. The author really knows his stuff, so it's not dumbed down, and it's a great choice for the experienced rune reader. Yet it's not too complex and confusing for someone just starting out. I paid full price for this. I was not given a product discount for an honest, unbiased review, or compensated in any way.

A Solid Runic Foundation

When you find an author that discusses esoteric topics with clarity, simplicity, and above all, experience and knowledge, you know you have found a good author. When that same author offers academic references and clearly stated personal opinions, you know you have found a great author. Mountfort falls under the second category.

I really appreciate Mountfort’s efforts to include a variety of different sources when discussing the Runes. I definitely got the feel that he is well researched and practiced and not just regurgitating what others have said.

I like his writing style and honesty. Rather than paint some mystic associations he is down to earth and practical. His main intention is to introduce the divinational aspects rather than the magical and developmental ones. Though, he does offer a little bit on these as well.

The authors correspondence section of the Runes gives us some traditional names, sounds, imagery, and definitions, as well as, the traditional poems associated with each Rune, their meanings, keywords, and myths/legends related with them. The myths and legends part I really liked. This is by far the best introductory book on the Runes I have come across.

I love this book

I love this book. I like the way that it is organized, it's easy to use and I love the explanations it give for the runes. Includes lots of cool poems for each rune. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Two of my friends have since bought their own copy and are also very happy with it.

Encounters with Jesus

Timothy Keller is in the midst of releasing a 10-part series called "Encounters with Jesus". If all the books are as solid as the ones which I have read, they are well worth your time. As a pastor, one of my biggest impediments in leading others to know Christ is that they believe they know him already. They have grown up in the church, gone to Sunday School, heard all the Bible stories, and they think that is the equal as knowing him.

The books in this series question the assumptions we make about Christ. Each book in the series covers a conversation Jesus had with someone. These conversations were not about individual sins or particular theological beliefs and practices, nor were they a bunch of talking points or a political platform. Instead, in these encounters we see him meeting people at the point of their important, unspoken questions: Who are we, and why are we here? Why be a good person; why love rather than hate? What's wrong with the world--And what, if anything, can make it right?

The Gospels are crawling with encounters that made a deep impression on those who conversed with Jesus in this way. Keller examines these encounters and how they can still address our questions and uncertainties today.
So far, I have read three:

"The Grieving Sisters", which is the story of Mary and Martha mourning their brother's death. Here, we are faced with the questions, what does the world need, and who can make the world right? Keller examines the individual personality of Jesus and shows us that because he is both God and man, he is capable of providing everything we need.

"The Wedding Party" covers Jesus' very first public act in starting his ministry was to turn water into wine in the middle of a wedding celebration. Here, Keller unpacks the significance of the feast--a symbol of the end of judgment, the celebration to come, and the atonement needed to make it possible.

"The First Christian" delves into an encounter between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, one of his most beloved followers. In this book, Keller illuminates the Christian belief of faith and make sense of its function in solving the crucial mysteries of life.
Each book is wonderfully written and easy to understand, yet deep in truth and wisdom.

He answers this question by giving us an exposition of Jesus' first recorded miracle, or sign at a wedding feast in Cana as recorded in chapter two of the Gospel of John.

The miracle of Jesus' turning water into wine was ultimately a symbol or a signifier of something greater to come. Keller masterfully gives three future signs that Jesus' miracle at the wedding banquet point to. There are three symbols or types in this wedding encounter that all ultimately point to our future with Christ. This story is a picture of how Jesus enjoyed the joy at the wedding feast by providing more wine, and yet how He became our substitute on the cross by receiving the cup of God's wrath that we deserve so that we can one day receive the coming joy provided by Him.

Keller unfolds the big story of all of the Scriptures in this one story from John 2. He shows our need to be reconciled to God, how Jesus provides what we need, and how Jesus is the provider of the feast that we all ultimately long for. We can face anything in life knowing what awaits us at the Lamb's party that is to come in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Love this series

I've enjoyed all of The Encounter with Jesus series, but this may have been my favorite because of the rich exposition of John 2. I've never heard this passage expounded in this way and connected to the gospel so directly.

Keller first points out Jesus makes himself the Master of the party. He brings joy and life to something on the edge of disaster. He then points out,
"`Yes,' he is saying, `I'm going to suffer. Yes, there's going to be self-denial. Yes, there's going to be sacrifice--for me first and then for my followers as well. But it's all a means to an end, which is festival joy! It's all in order to bring about resurrection and the new heavens and new earth. The end of all evil and death and tears. You know all those Dionysian legends about the forest running with wine, dancing, and music? That's nothing compared to the eternal feast that is coming at the end of history'" (68 of 646).

These connectedness with the overall mission of Jesus saturates the water into wine wedding feast sign. It's a rich picture that refracts the gospel story in dozen ways. I don't want to give to much more away. It's a short read, and I could give three or four more paragraph quotations with rich gospel pictures.

Instead of doing that, go ahead and pick up The Wedding Feast and enjoy Keller's deft gospel-centered exposition.

Media's latest decorating darling, Brown boasts TV credits including Oprah, Good Morning America, and an eponymous program on the Style Network. As it turns out, the charismatic Brown is equally crafty in print. Her crisply designed and brightly photographed book offers step-by-step instructions for decorating projects from the basic (painting) to the wild (sewing a pompom bed skirt). It's the former that will appeal to most do-it-yourselfers: her design for asymmetrical shelving, for instance, is clean and modern, and the project is relatively simple to execute, even for the artistically and mechanically challenged. Her themed rooms-e.g. urban loft, seaside cottage and cabin in the woods-offer interesting models, and the individual components could work in virtually any room, anywhere. For each project, close-range photographs capture detail, and a concise list of supplies and tools heads up the minimalist (but sufficient) directions. But many of Brown's ideas seem frankly outlandish: the lamps made out of socks and sink strainers, the sandpaper glued to the coffee table and the stitched pleather floor covering may look good in the glossy photos, but it's hard to imagine them working in real homes. After all, a dishtowel safety-pinned to a chair ("reupholstering can cost an arm and a leg") is still just a dishtowel. Color photos throughout. (On sale Oct. 22)

About the Author
Katie Brown is a Cornell-educated art historian who has raced on the U.S. Ski Team, acted in TV commercials (for Kodak, AT&T, Saturn) and run a catering business out of her house in Los Angeles. Born in Petoskey, Michigan in 1963, she has three brothers and sisters and grew up surrounded by thirty-two cousins and fourteen aunts and uncles.

Her enthusiasm for entertaining, gardening and cooking inspired her to open her own store called Goat. Located in Los Angeles and Mackinac Island, Michigan, Goat quickly became a popular antique store and cafe. Katie has been serving up dime-store domesticity on Lifetime's Next Door with Katie Brown since October 1997. Brown has opened Katie Brown Workshops in Los Angeles, New York, and Bridgehampton.

I don't get Katie B.

This book and KB's show (Katie Brown's Workshop) are just so weird! I don't get how she could've not only made it as a "designer" but also managed to get on TV with her own show. What? I have to admit that whenever her show is on pbs, I watch it just to see her outlandish, impractical, and rather ugly craft ideas... such as wrapping men's shirts around vases and tying them w/ ribbon!? Spreading dry coffee grounds into a baking dish full of water, stirring it around, and then dipping the bottom of a glass into it--then using it to "print" circles onto craft paper to create a table covering?! First of all, the technique didn't work and looked like a dirty, coffee cup stained piece of paper---so ugly, I'm sorry. There's always something SO bizarre and weird on her show-- which is what compells me to watch it.

A home should be a home...not a theme park

I have to be honest here: I had high hopes for this book.
The first problem with Katie Brown's book is that embraces a really [odd], artsy crafty approach....like turning a wok into a light fixture. Just because something can become something else doesn't make it right. It just looks tacky.
The projects are strange, the decor is way too thematic (like a theme park..I swear), and it just seem soooo off...

I remember seeing Katie Brown on TV and being fairly unimpressed; chancing on this book at a library, I borrowed it and was still unimpressed.

All too often she seems to be trying too hard to be whimsical and cutesy-poo, with diminishing results. And there are ideas that are decent enough on their own, but combined with all the other ideas for her different styles, just ends up being cloying.

Some are weird...like curtain rods made from push brooms and mops, or a lighting fixture made from rakes. A lighting fixture made from a wok actually doesn't look too bad, and some lights made from socks (!) aren't too bad either.

Others, though, look good at a glance, but on closer examination don't work too well. A faux-quilt made of plaid wool scarves crisscrossed on a bed and pinned together looks authentic enough when just flipping through pages, but on a closer look just looks chintzy. A kid's room lighting fixture looks fun until you realize it uses flashlights and might not light very well (or possibly need continual batteries).

And some are just plain weird and/or impractical. A coffee table covered with contact paper is OK enough, but another covered with sandpaper?!? Another, given a pebbles-and-grout top, actually looks kinda cool but might not be a good surface for a wineglass. But the idea of decorating a living room with actual tree branches strikes me as colossally bad (unless for a single evening); I can envision all sorts of cleaning horror stories as twigs and bits of bark, or possibly even bugs, start to litter the floor. (And heaven forbid they end up being a fire hazard...)

There are some decent ideas with fabrics, including some very nice workable pillow concepts. The book isn't entirely useless; I would recommend using an idea here and there. But overall the styles are cloying and unlivable, with too much emphasis placed on whimsy and looks-good-at-a-glance and not enough on permanence, practicality, ease of care, and a workable graciousness. Try harder next time, Katie.
