Born in Mumbai, Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut in Pakistan at the age of 16 in 1989. One of the most gifted and entertaining batsmen to have played international cricket, he scored more runs and made more centuries than any other player in history - in both Tests and ODIs. He made his first Test century at the age of 17, at the age of 36 he became the first player to make a one-day double century and in 2012 he scored his 100th international hundred. With India he won the World Cup in 2011 and reached the top of the world Test rankings in the same year. In 2013, he retired from cricket after playing his 200th and final Test in front of his home crowd in Mumbai.

An awesome perspective !

This was a priceless experience.. I wished the book didn't end. It was really refreshing to see things from Sachin's perspective. The only time I saw him live in a stadium finds a mention in his book as well, which was a pleasant surprise!

His child like enthusiasm for the game was plain to see on that day and throughout his career. This same enthusiasm is reflected right through the book as well. I enjoyed all of the anecdotes shared, most of which weren't public knowledge.

This is a must read for a Sachin fan. Even if you're not a fan of him or the game, it's still worth picking up to get an idea of literally the blood, sweat and tears that made up a legendary career. Life really begins now for you sir, wish you all the best!

Could have been lot better.

It is actually pretty ordinary . I did not get anything substantially new that I have not read elsewhere, which is not saying much anyway. There are anecdotes right through the book . Some of which I enjoyed .
Some of his early days in 80s made a good reading . Two things that I became more aware of were
He got injured badly right through his career and that bothered him and he struggled with it . Rather unfortunate or may be he was constantly pushing his body.
and the second one was he really loved and played for his personal records - centuries , # of tests ..there is a constant theme about these numbers in the entire book . Not to say he was selfish etc ….which he was not , but I just did not think he cared for his personal records as much.
That infamous declaration by Rahul which left him stranded @194 is another example. Rahul should not have declared (I did not know that Rahul delayed declaration in sydney test few months ago which may have robbed us of our first series win in aus) but Sachin was livid even after 24 hours !!! when Rahul came over to talk to him . SRT just could not let it go that Rahul tried to send a tough message to Pak that India means business (However bad that call was from Rahul). I just found that strange. Sachin loves his 100s and 200s.
For some one with whom he has scored maximum runs with , lack of warmth towards Rahul is conspicuous . He has good words for his knocks but nothing more . There is lot of warmth towards Anil, Sourav, Yuvi, Bhajji, Viru etc. Probably Rahul himself was reserved .
He talks about the entire 2011 Eng series and not a word about Rahul’s 3 centuries !!! - may be I am reading too much. I maybe biased because I was surprised by Rahul’s interview by Cricinfo following the release of this book and this incident . Rahul was unusually belligerent when asked if he was looking forward to read the book - he said something like “I am not looking forward to these aspects but I will look to his views on batting skills and how he prepared etc”….
Coming to cricket itself I was surprised as to how so many of his shots were played even before ball was delivered. It was surprising to learn the amount of pre-meditation and out-smarting that goes on !!.
This guy lived , breathed cricket - an ultimate Cricket Huccha.

An inspiring account both on and off the field!

This is an amazing and thorough account for one of the greatest cricketer of my generation! The less known stories of managing injuries and enduring tremendous pain for a greater cause is a takeaway for any person in any walk of life! The best part of this book is probably the unheard stories of Sachin's off the field partnership with Anjali, without whose sacrifice and support, we would not probably see such a terrific journey of 24 years!

And thanks a ton to Boria for batting with Sachin to write this book, to capture all those moments I grew up watching!

While the book is an autobiographical account and it does perfect justice to the genre, it would be more enjoyable with little bit more creative deviation, something from a narrator's point of view here and there!

Overall 'Playing it my way' is a must read for anyone who knows Cricket because it's about the GOD himself! A fav in my Kindle library!

Seriously good advocacy....

Sidney Phipson’s work first appeared in 1892 around the time that Mrs Carlill was having trouble with her smoke ball. The new, 15th edition, maintains the very highest standards of the Sweet and Maxwell Common Law Library: the simple truth is that Phipson on Evidence is the best book available for both practitioners and academics. Lawyers know that the ‘problem’ with evidence is the changing nature of the subjects with its massive case law and continual attempts at full codification by successive governments.

So, what changes have taken place in five years since the fifteenth edition? Uncomfortably, for many people, rather too much as the pace of reform has finally quickened to a trot with the arrival of the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) in 1999, and their criminal partners, the Criminal Procedure Rules 2005 (covered in an elegant and readable fashion by ‘Blackstone’s Guide to The Criminal Procedure Rules 2005’ by Duncan Atkinson and Tim Moloney: OUP ).

Hodge Malek says, in ‘Phipson’, that these new rules ‘open with overriding objectives which colour the interpretation of the procedural rules generally’. We found Blackstone’s Guide very helpful to the everyday practitioner but if you want more, then go to the fount of all evidentiary knowledge which is “Phipson” and use them in tandem.

Readers of ‘The Barrister’ do not escape lightly this time because we must refer to the provisions of the CJA 2003 and the great changes we have seen with the implementation of the statute. Malek writes that ‘by and large the changes … are intended to strengthen the hand of the prosecution’ but that really cements what both Labour and the previous Tory governments have been doing for many years which has been to meddle with criminal justice when what we really need is full codification which so many ‘Criminal Law Review’ readers have been expecting for the last twenty years.

Well, we are now on this great adventure with the arrival of the new rules and some 21st century common sense to be found in the Phipson explanations of hearsay and character. Life would not be quite right unless we had a mention of the Human Rights Act, and Phipson adds this extra layer of argument well.

Proof enough that, on the evidence, Phipson has no near contender for sheer depth and breadth of its task can be seen with what the book now contains. The new edition has been completely re-written although the structure remains largely the same: it is the content which is fundamentally different, new and improved.

There are 44 chapters, each chapter being written by an expert in his or her field. We believe it is an essential reference tool for both the practitioner and the academic and we use it frequently as a lecture source at the University of London. It covers the complex mixture of rules, principles and practice directions which is rightly pitched at both the practical and intellectual level and which no other one competitor reaches. It’s right to say that Phipson helps you in every situation related to evidence.

Whenever we are asked by our constituents on the Council we serve ‘where can I find the law’ as though there is one book which contains everything, I think of Halsbury, naturally. Then, we think further and remember the individual gems which comprise “The Common Law Library”.

With other leading Library titles already reviewed, we have turned to one of my own personal favourites which is Phipson. We suspect most of us have our own ‘little favourites’ stemming from student days (‘Learning the Law’) to those dreary nights in November during the Bar course desperately trying to finish a practical training exercise on evidence and procedure. That is when we really found The Common Law Library although we had known of the existence of Chitty since ‘A’ levels in 1960s. To me, Phipson is an island on its own when it comes to the wealth of material on evidence. It is always a pity that it appears every five years or so, but Malek and his excellent team are to be congratulated on a serious piece of work which is of historic importance with the gratefully received civil and criminal rules and a CJA which seems to make some sense (even for Parliament).

Robert Walker rightly says that this is a ‘venerable work’ in his generous foreword but he then spoils it by reminding us that there were other highly regarded textbooks on evidence in the nineteenth century.

The point is that Phipson has the lasting power and it does make it’s own contribution to the development of the law of evidence by bravely venturing into fields like equitable estoppel where no book has boldly gone before. To us, the modernisation of the well-discarded Criminal Evidence Act 1898 now reflect the changing notions of fairness with the new CJA – Walker writes so well when he says: “evidence has ancient roots which are today barely discernible under the ramifications of centuries of common law development and statutory reform, some of it of a drastic nature”.

It’s the drastic nature of this reform which we believe many would like to see develop so that in the not too distant future we have a workable system of codification of the law of evidence.

HOW TO BE SERIOUSLY GOOD IN COURT

Another book crossed my wig box the other day: “The Devil’s Advocate” by Iain Morley �18 [THOMSON/SWEET & MAXWELL] .

I could not believe my luck! This was the book of my dreams, the Titanic of the advocacy world (even though it is modestly sized). I spoke to some Bar students nervously smoking outside their advocacy assessments and asked if they knew of this little book. “No!”. So I replied, ‘it’s only a two hour job to read’ and I believe they took my advice because Iain Morley has bridged the gap between reading about advocacy and how you actually do it. Well done. There was not much around on the ‘advocacy’ bookstands in 1980s but this addition is warmly welcomed and should be in every white wig box.

Boring science text and even worse online version from WileyPLUS

If you must get this text because it is required - I recommend you get an old version and buy the most inexpensive copy. It is a horrible resource with outdated stuffy examples. I guess it's just a typical science text book. The WileyPLUS online supplement is so bad! That's what prompted me to write the review. You can't even do something as basic as search the text- even a PDF format will allow you to do that. It is basically like reading a grouping of screen shots that make up the online text. It is so budget I can't believe Wiley dare's charge for it. No matter what, DON'T pay the extra cash to get the WileyPLUS online edition it is a rip off and dreadful user experience.

This text does a phenomenal job at display and conveying ideas.
It is easy to grasp and covers a wide range of problems and references within the book.
If you read this text you will have a very fundamental understanding of ochem.

I recommend this text along with the study guide student solutions manual.

Awesome O-Chem Text

Such a great text compared to my other O-Chem texts. I was a little upset I had to buy a new text after 301 for my 302 class but it was definitely worth the purchase. Mastering Chemistry is the worst online homework ever! Wiley Plus is fun and challenging and has great links to text after answering questions that actually take you to the right place in the chapter (unlike Mastering Chemistry). Its rare to enjoying spending $200 on a book but this one will be on my shelve for the rest of my like. Please ignore the other reviews that give it 0 stars for not having Wiley Plus access. That has nothing to do with the content of the book but rather them neglecting to read the description. Hope this review helps.

About the Author

Amy Macy is Professor in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Educator in Distance Learning and the Outstanding Achievement in Instructional Technology. She has worked for labels including MTM, MCA, Sparrow Records, and the RCA Label Group where she marketed Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, and Alabama. Amy was responsible for national retail sales at Walmart, Kmart, Target, and Best Buy, while coordinating marketing strategies nationally with RCA’s distributor Bertelsmann Music Group. She has been an artist in residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Clyde Philip Rolston is Professor of Music Business in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business at Belmont University. Prior to joining the faculty at Belmont University he was a Vice President of Marketing at Centaur Records, Inc. While with Centaur Records, Dr. Rolston engineered and produced many projects, including recordings by the Philadelphia Trio and the London Symphony Orchestra. He is an active member of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association. Dr. Rolston received a Ph.D. in Marketing from Temple University and has taught marketing to music business students for twenty years.

Paul Allen is Associate Professor in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University and co-author of Record Label Marketing, also published by Focal Press. He is also a frequent lecturer at other universities on artist management and other music business subjects. His career work has included radio, TV, political management, and the music business.

The late Tom Hutchison was a professor of marketing in the Department of Recording Industry at MTSU, but was on leave to serve as the director of the School of Business and Management at Husson University. He worked with a wide range of popular artists including Faith Hill, The Dixie Chicks, The Roots, and Beck. Tom also conducted market research projects for Sony, MCA/Universal, DreamWorks, and Warner Music Group.

He is the author of Mechanical Processing of Materials (Van Nostrand, 1967) and co-author of Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations (with E.S. Nachtman, Dekker, 1985). Both of the first editions of his books Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials (Addison-Wesley, 1984) and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (Addison-Wesley, 1989) have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award of SME. He has conducted research in several areas in manufacturing processes; is the author of numerous technical papers and articles in professional journals, handbooks, and encyclopedias; and has edited several conference proceedings. He also has been editor and co-editor of various technical journals and has served on the editorial board of Encyclopedia Americana.

Professor Kalpakjian has received the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award (1966), the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology (1970), the ASME Centennial Medallion (1980), the SME International Education Award (1989), a Person of the Millennium Award from IIT (1999), and the Albert Easton White Outstanding Teacher Award from ASM International (2000); the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award for 2002 was named after him. Professor Kalpakjian is a life fellow of ASME, fellow of SME, fellow and life member of ASM International, fellow emeritus of The International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), and a past president and founding member of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution/SME. He is a high honors graduate of Robert College (Istanbul), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Steven R. Schmid is an associate professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and conducts research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with Honors) and master’s and Ph.D. degrees, both in mechanical engineering, from Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards, including the John T. Parsons Award from SME (2000), the Newkirk Award from ASME (2000), the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (2000 and 2003), and the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching (2005). He is also the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award (1996) and an ALCOA Foundation Award (1994).

Professor Schmid is the author of over 100 technical papers, has co-authored Fundamentals of Machine Elements (McGraw-Hill), Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication (Dekker), Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials (Prentice Hall), and has contributed two chapters to the CRC Handbook of Modern Tribology. He is a registered professional engineer, a certified manufacturing engineer of SME, a member of the North American Research Institution, and a fellow of the ASME. In 2012, he was named an ASME Foundation Swanson Fellow and served as Assistant Director for Research Partnerships at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, National Institute for Science and Technology.

This is one of 2 books that captures the essence of a manufacturing management (or industrial engineering) engineering undergraduate degree- the other being an operations management text from Ray Wild, Nigel Slack, or Laurie Mullins. Very good manufacturing text

I've taught a quarter-long Manufacturing Processes course out of this text (and its predecessor) for four years, and plan to continue using it. This text presents a great overview of a wide variety of processes, which is exactly what I'm trying to achieve. It also goes into reasonable depth with many processes. I do not attempt to cover the entire text in one quarter, however -- I use roughly half.

When asked on end-of-term evaluations whether they agreed with the statement, "The textbook was valuable in my learning experience," students consistently rated this text 4.1/5.0. The average score campus-wide for textbooks is 3.6/5.0. Anecdotally, the handful of students who actually bother reading the text come up to me and say, "It really is interesting and easy to read."

Yes, there are some errors which have been frustratingly carried over from the 5th edition, but you catch many of them with a first reading. These errors knock it down from 5- to 4-stars, but I'm still really happy with the text.

A poor choice in a textbook

This book is not worth the money it costs. It hasn't been proofread from its last edition very well, still referring to old diagrams that aren't renumbered in their proper order. Also, most of the questions it asks for homework actually require that students get the answers online because they don't even address them in the book. Also, there are typos on several equations they report in the book. This can give the students confusion on which equation is actually correct and provides inconsistences in the math the authors exhibit in their examples. Upon looking at some solutions in the solutions manual, it expects students to somehow know they are not incorporating friction when the book doesn't even specify to do so. Overall, it does not seem that this book was well thought out. It seems that it was just put out quick in order to have a new edition from which to make money. I would not recommend this as a textbook for any class.

Sylvia Walby is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and holder of the UNESCO Chair of Gender Research at Lancaster University. In her latest sociological text, "Crisis", she brings complexity theory to bear in a reconsideration of how society operates and how social crises of various kinds arise and propagate through their associated social institutions. The book examines the financial crisis of 2007/8, and shows how this generated a subsequent cascade of interconnected crises which continues even now, more than seven years later. She shows how financial collapse of the markets led to economic crisis, in the form of recession, which led on to fiscal crisis in the form of austerity, and so to political and democratic crises across Europe and thus to the continuing threat of collapse of the EU. The author explores the gender biases inherent within each of these crises and also looks at possible future trajectories, with likelihood of further financial collapse and a consequential deepening security crisis, by drawing comparisons with the global consequences of the historic financial crash of 1929. She doesn't go as far as to suggest that renewed world war might ensue, but the implication remains there.

The book presents a cogent narrative of the on-going crisis cascade and other consequences of the growth of the neoliberal project which, since the 1980s, has been ousting the post-war social democratic project and systematically eroding the regulation of the financial world, that was so carefully formulated in order to prevent a recurrence of the 1929 crisis -- with the ensuing rise of fascism, nationalism and ultimately the embroiling of almost the entire world in warfare. She shows that far from being self-equilibrating and more efficient, unregulated financial markets invariably become unstable, corrupt and corrosive: finance capital makes most profit during times of economic instability and so without regulation inevitably drives the world towards economic instability, disrupting the environment within which industrial capital (i.e. real productivity) thrives and generating gender and social inequalities. This in turn erodes democracy as states increasingly use the language of crisis to invoke emergency measures, whilst violence erupts and social cohesiveness is eroded.

The author does a reasonable job of keeping away from any complex social science jargon but the book remains a far from easy read, owing largely to its academic rigour and completeness -- ideal for the social science undergraduate, perhaps, but hard going for a lay reader, who will probably also find the book highly repetitive. The author builds her arguments systematically and slowly and at great length over the course of some six detailed chapters, with outer bracketing chapters offering Introduction and Conclusion; anyone wishing to cut quickly to the core of this book would do well to read just the first and final chapters in the first instance as these form a useful lead-in and overall summary of the book's conclusions in a condensed and easily understood way. The central chapters can then be referred to afterwards for a more detailed examination of each of the component steps in the crisis cascade, as well as a very thorough examination of their gender implications.

Proponents of the neoliberal project (and many supporters of recent UK governments) will no doubt find much within the covers of this book which they would wish to contest. As a detailed and academically rigorous argument for the reintroduction of financial regulation, the establishment of great social and gender equality, and deepening of democratic control, and in spelling out the consequences of failing in this, the book makes for very sobering reading.

Fantastic!!

Love the methodology of this book. There are no measurements, just suggested ingredients, with lots of alternative options, accompanied by tons and tons of photos, both of the ingredients (so you can get the right brand) and every single step, teaching you how the dish should look and taste. Inexperienced cooks might be a bit intimidated by the lack of teaspoons and tablespoons, but if you are willing to take the plunge, this book will inspire you to take his recipes and make the dishes your own, since there is so much room for adding your personal touch. Yes, all recipes are 100% vegan. And yes, it has all the VBMC antics, the dagger-shaped chef's knife, or my personal fave, the skull-domed blender lid. I am 52 years old and not an expert in black metal, but my 22-year-old son tells me that all the recipe titles are actually song titles, slightly altered, and that is such a hoot. This book seems to be a true labor of love. I have recommended it to a lot of people.

i bought this book to help give me some ideas, and LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
it's basically a book of base recipes, to which you add whatever you like. there are no measurements, but instructions on how to prepare and cook everything, so it's really fantastic.

My boyfriend found Brian's channel on YouTube. He loves watching it. He rarely pays full price on anything. When he said he wants to buy Brian's book and not wait until his birthday next month I was shocked.

I kept saying wait until your birthday. So I talked to my step mom. I told her I got in contact with Brian. I said this is something my boyfriend really wants. So she bought it for his birthday.

I asked Brian if he does personalization autographs. He said sorry but he doesn't. He explained that he doesn't get the books and they are shipped from a warehouse. I contacted him again the next day. I explained how until I came along my boyfriend isn't used to people doing nice things for him. I told Brian what my boyfriend's birthdays were like before meeting me.

I asked Brian would he please make an exception and personalize my boyfriend's copy of his book. Brian shortly responded and said he would personalize it!!!!! I was so excited by his answer my boyfriend still thinks Brian won't personalize his copy. I bought the book directly from Brian. He did as he promised mailed it the next week. He let me know he was out of town and would mail it as soon as he got back. He also messaged me a tracking number as he promised. My step mom got the book today. Brian personalized the book exactly the way I asked him to! I am so excited about my boyfriend getting his gift. It was worth the $5 extra for the autograph.

I asked my step mom to text me pictures. So the pictures I am using for my review are from her. Brian did such an amazing job! I have never in my life seen a cookbook so beautifully put together. I have also never seen a cookbook with so many pictures! I can tell Brian worked hard on this book. He deserves every dollar he makes on it. He really put his heart into this book.

When my boyfriend said it only listed ingredients and not the amounts I was a bit worried. I'm still a beginner at cooking.

I wondered until I saw it why is it $30. When I saw pictures of it I instantly understood. I am looking forward to using these recipes.

One recipe I am excited about trying is the fried rice recipe. I love fried rice it's one of my favorite meals. Normally I am a mashed potatoes snob. I will typically only eat homemade mashed potatoes made from my step mom's recipe. I will make an exception for Brian's mashed potatoes recipe and try it.

Brian's fried rice looks different than most fried rice recipes. One thing that appears different to me is the ingredients. I made the fried rice OMG that is rhe BEST fried rice ever!

My boyfriend is usually criticizing what ever I make. He raved about the fried rice twice while eating it. He then said I have to have more of this! He had nothing but compliments on the fried rice! I was so happy I messaged Brian shortly after we ate. He instantly responded Brian was glad I got use of the book all ready and I made his day messaging him. He is a really nice guy.
