Do we need yet another sales book?

I have never made it a secret that I think there are too many books on selling which are of little help to sellers. Those written form the point of view: "This is what made me successful and I see no reason, why this should not work for you too" I find the least useful.

SNAP Selling by Jill Konrath, is definitely not of this category. It is a book on sales that is urgently needed. It provides sellers with a set of strategies and tactics enabling them to speed up sales and win more business based on a solid framework. Contrary to many other sales books I have read, SNAP Selling spells out clearly for what type of prospects/customers these strategies and rules should be applied.

In the words of the author, today's customers are frazzled. Time is their most precious commodity. They consider buying as a disruptive act eating into their most precious resource. Even if the status quo is far from optimal; they prefer to stay with it as long as they ever can. They dread the effort and time in it will take to align their organization in agreeing to do something different. They are also fearful about making risky decision that could negatively impact their career.

We should not be mistaken in the hope that these characteristics of customers are of a temporary nature caused by the crisis for which we see signs, that the worst might now be over. The current status is the new normal and the pressure to do more with less will continue.

From the above definition of the customer, we can conclude that the book is about how to sell solutions and services considered a major purchase by the customer in the B2B context. As many sellers still have to learn to see selling from the customer' s point of view it would have been helpful if this had been spelled out clearly somewhere in the text.

Konrath predicts that sellers continuing using their dear and tried techniques such as closing and objection handling will be relegated to the D-Zone. The D-zone is where sellers are dismissed or deleted, their sales are deferred permanently or at least delayed and where prospects disappear. Sellers getting relegated to the D-Zone have two choices, they either blame the stupid customer for their problems and thus endangering their career, or they change their approach to fit better with the needs of frazzled customers.

For those sellers wanting to change their approach to avoid the D-Zone, the four SNAP rules are proposed:
* Making the decision process Simple for the customer
* Become iNvaluable through value brought to the customer relationship
* Be Aligned with the customer's needs at all time
* Assure that the purchase of the solutions/services remains a Priority in the customer's mind

To apply the SNAP rules, sellers must understand what is going on in the customers head. First, one must understand who in the customer organization will make the decision. Then the context in which the decision has to be made must be understood. To capture this knowledge the author proposes a Buyer's matrix. This matrix then is the basis to draw up customer personas which then allow mastering what is called in the book the mind meld. Mind meld can be practically applied by checking of the relevance of a message a seller wants to convey for example in a phone call or a presentation from the customer's point of view.

Sales excellence does not come from knowing why what has to be done how, all presented in the book. Sales excellence comes from doing. To help readers getting to action, there is a companion website where templates for the tools such as the buyer's matrix can be downloaded.

The major part of the book is devoted to help the reader to understand the decision process customers go through to make major purchases. Customers:
1. Allow access (starting with no interest connecting, to end up agreeing to a conversation)
2. Initiate change (after having listen to ideas, they decide that the status quo is unacceptable)
3. Select resources (they start considering their options and end up selecting the best decision)

For each of these phases concrete guidelines are given on what needs to be done and how to adhere to the SNAP rules to help the customer to come to a decision.

To help the customer with decision 1 for example, recommendations are made how to capitalize on trigger events or how to align with the customer through winning value propositions. On the companion website, the reader can find a synopsis for a Value Proposition Generator. Some subject matter experts might wonder about the format suggested for the Value Proposition. It is though totally adequate for the context of phase 1. The possible wondering arises from the fact that people usually use more complex value proposition schemes which would though be more appropriate for phase 3. Avoiding the over used and often misunderstood term might thus have helped to prevent potential debate and confusion.

Decision 2 is often not addressed at all by sellers. Emphasizing the need to demonstrate specific business value for a buyer to decide to leave status quo is to me the most important part of this book. If this concept where widely understood, we would not find studies like those from CSO Insights indication a high percentage of forecast opportunities ending up with what the sellers call a 'no decision', because the customer, despite initial interest, was finally not buying from anybody. Another symptom for ignoring this phase is the asking of premature qualification questions such as "do you have budget"; a sure way to be relegated to the D-zone, due to lack of alignment.

For phase 3, there are strategies such as how to be aligned with the customer by balancing the Value-Risk Equation and how to become iNvaluable, by collaborating with hot prospects as if they where already a customer.

Evidently phase 3 is the phase of presentations and proposals. As there is a lot of literature already available on these subjects, the author just highlights how the SNAP rules apply to these items.

I think it is important that we are reminded that these 3 phases should not be mistaken for a linear process. Sellers cannot always assume to be able to capture the prospect's attention at a yet untroubled stage.( phase 1) Sellers having done a good job in particular in phase 2 might also find that the prospect has become sufficiently comfortable with the relation to forgo phase 3. It is therefore more crucial to exactly understand in what phase the customer is and to use the strategies appropriate for the respective phase. Failing to do so is another sure way to get relegated to the D-Zone.

Jill Konrath also gives the reader practical advice on how to implement the strategies. To do so, she not only gives examples from her own experience but also through selected quotes from practitioners and consultants. I particularly like the fact, that not all these examples are success stories. She does not shy away from also talking about failures and what lessons can be learned from them. This makes the book all that more credible to me.

For me it is now easy to answer the often recurring question about what sales book I would recommend, if I only could choose one for somebody new to sales or somebody wanting to assure to stay relevant in sales: SNAP Selling by Jill Konrath.

"How To Sell" Guide for Large Accounts in a Frenetic Environment...4.5*

The timing of this book couldn't be better. Yes, our customers are "crazy-busy" and are "frazzled" and are "not waiting for our calls" and are "deluged with information and choices." Yes, it does take a different selling approach today then what was effective in a less frenetic environment. Kornath explains in considerable detail how today's customer thinks and acts and she outlines the selling process to capture this customer. Her process is based on SNAP, an acronym for "SIMPLE" (eliminate complexity and effort for your client in their decision making process), "iNvaluable" (the value you personally bring to the relationship in world which lacks differentiation and value), "ALIGNED" (staying relevant to your customer at all times - they don't have time for anything else) and "PRIORITY (in an ever-changing business environment, you can't afford to have your prospect deem your services non-urgent). She also details a 3 step Decision-making process for each client from 1st Decision (Allow Access) to 2nd Decision (Initiate Change) to 3rd Decision (Select Resources). My assessment of the book is summarized as follows:

1) The book is well written in a conversational voice. It is well organized, succinct and supported with solid examples.

2) Very much appreciated that strategies didn't include buyer manipulation, tricks, gimmicks, jams or pitches. She demonstrates how to differentiate yourself and your product in a crowded market.

3) Book places you squarely in the mind of the buyer and the buyer's perspective. Kornath outlines a step by step process to improve your closing ratio and shorten selling cycle time.

4) I didn't find this book to be a page turner. It's not a book that can be powered through in a day or two - it's meant to be read, digested and then back to the plow horse. It is more of a "How To" Sell book than an engaging story telling experience. That being said, this will be a reference book that will reside firmly on my shelf.

5) The book is written for the reader interested in B2B sales at/to larger companies & larger accounts - with more complex sales - providing multiple selling opportunities - with longer cycle sales - as opposed to selling to individuals with shorter cycle decision times (although many of the concepts apply).

6) Book is more applicable for salespeople at larger established companies vs those at smaller companies or start-ups

A few of my favorite excerpts:

"CSO Insights shows that 53% of sales organizations report that less than half of their first meetings resulted in a second meeting...What was the biggest difference between companies that did well versus those that struggled? Easy access to insights and knowledge about their prospects' company, marketplace, competitor and even decision makers...in short, you must prepare for these initial meetings...winging it doesn't work. Until you understand this in your bones, you'll have a tough time in sales."

"Enrolling is not about forcing, cajoling, tricking, bargaining, pressuring or guilt tripping someone into doing things your way...enrollment is the art and practice of generating a spark of possibility for others to share...people who are 'enrolled' want to get involved. They believe it's worth it, that a positive result - perhaps one they'd never even thought of before - is possible."

"Deliver a killer presentation that tells the story of how their lives will be better when they use your solution...back it up with stats and similar client examples. Make sure you eliminate the unnecessary; get rid of bullets and get rid of words. Use images to relay your ideas....that's what it takes to engage people and get their conceptual buy-in. Get them excited. Remove the drudge and toil factors. When you can do that, they care - and you really need that if you're going to do business with their organization."

SNAP Selling your way into your next job

Contrary to what most people think, companies ARE still hiring today! As an executive search firm, we are working on 37 open positions as this review is being posted.

Which is why, if you are a job hunter, you need Jill Konrath's "Snap Selling" in your arsenal of resources.

Selling in 2011 is tougher than ever and to be successful, sales professionals must know (or learn!) "how to sell to today's crazy, busy, frazzled customers." So how does this relate to the job hunt? As a job seeker, one is, in every sense of the word, a salesperson. Yes, even if you are an engineer, a chemist, an accountant or an IT professional, if you are interested in pursuing a new career opportunity, you must become a sales professional. Thus, wherever you read "sales professional" in the next few paragraphs, substitute the phrase "job seeker."

Today the ONLY sales professionals (and job hunters) who break through the clutter and get the attention of a decision-maker are the ones who are completely focused on the customer's business and the positive impact that they can have on it. Failure to take this approach, Konrath illustrates, almost always results in the sales person (job hunter) being "zapped from their in-box, tossed into the trash can or deleted from their voice mail."

How, then, do you get the attention of a busy, frazzled, harried decision-maker? You must construct and implement what Konrath refers to as a SNAP message:

* Simple
* iNvaluable
* Aligned
* a Priority

In regard to job hunting, what is significant to note here is that this approach could NEVER be effectively implemented in a response to an online or "advertised" job posting! On the other hand, it is TAILOR-MADE to use for tapping into the "hidden job market"!

Let's take a closer look at the elements of "SNAP Selling" as they relate to job hunting:

Keep it Simple - In communicating with a potential hiring manager, you must ensure SIMPLICITY in EVERYTHING you do. (Is your r�sum� brief and easy to read? Are you able to easily be contacted? Can a hiring manager quickly and easily comprehend the message you are delivering and quickly assess the impact it can have on the hiring company?)

iNvaluable - To get hired, you must be bringing fresh ideas. You have to stand out by being a person the company seemingly can't live without!

Aligned - Frazzled hiring managers must see an IMMEDIATE connection between what you do and what they are trying to achieve. What research have you done to understand what it is the company is trying to do and achieve and what can you do to help them do that?

Priority - Frazzled decision-makers only work on high priority items. You must make hiring you one of their TOP priorities. This concept is especially true as you implement your "touch plan" (See "`Headhunter' Hiring Secrets" for full details on this concept.)

If you don't deliver a SNAP message, Jill clearly points out, you WILL be hit decisively with the "delete key"!

Job hunting is tougher than ever before. Hiring managers are under extreme pressure to do more with less and to not make any hiring mistakes.

A vegan pie cooling in every window.

I was a tester for this book, and I am so excited that it was finally released! Pies can be a bit tricky, even if I used the same crust recipe that's worked before, sometimes it would fall apart and I never knew why. Terry and Isa don't just tell you that a recipe works, but why, so you will actually become a better baker via this book. Previous to this book, my go-to pie was a basic chocolate peanut butter in a pre-made crust. Now I am confident in my ability to whip up all kinds of fruit pies, crumbles, cream pies, homemade cookie and buttery pie crusts, and vegan cheesecakes which are NOT made with store-bought cream cheese.

Let me repeat that: vegan cheesecakes without faux cream cheese! They aren't soy-free, and take a little extra effort to make, but they are delicious and worth your time.

There aren't too many hard-to-find ingredients in this book, but there are a few that are key to many of the non-fruit pies: agar powder and coconut oil. Coconut oil is a little pricey, but you can make many pies with one jar. Agar powder can be found in health food stores, asian food stores, or on the internet if you don't have the former two in your area.

But there are also crusts and pie fillings that require no fancy ingredients, if you want to make vegan pie with your grandma you can do so with a shortening or olive oil based crust and frozen fruit. There really is a pie for every person in here.

Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake
Raspberry Lime Rickey Cheesecake (this was a big hit with family)
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cuplettes
Ginger Peach Pandowdy
Little Lemon Mousse Pies
Summer Fruit Buckle Cake
Rad Whip (awesome vegan whipped-cream topping)

A slice of heaven (even for non-vegans)

I'm a big dessert fan, but I was never THAT into pies. After trying a ton of recipes from this cookbook (full disclosure: I live with one of the recipe testers), I came 'round to loving them!

And even if you're an omnivore, you don't need to be scared off by the thought of vegan desserts. For many of these pies, I'd have never known they were vegan if I hadn't been told beforehand. They're all satisfying and delicious.

It's a useful, well-written cookbook - especially for vegans, naturally - but also for good anyone interested in learning more about the art of crafting pies (without having to deal with circumference and diameter). And it's a fun read, too! If you like a little wit 'n' banter in your recipes, you'll love Isa and Terry.

With 75 pies in the book, Vegan Pie in the Sky could fill your pie-hole for over a year (I'm just making the assumption that you'll make a pie a week, more if you're hungry), so you get a wide variety. The recipes range from the adventurous (chocolate olive oil shortbread crust? The idea freaked me out... but after trying the crust I give it a pie-five) to the traditional (Cosmos Apple Pie - and I usually don't even like apple pie, but this one is out of this world), so it'll satisfy every palate.

a billion delicious vegan pies!!

This book is SO much fun! All of the pies that I have made so far are delicious. There was not one fail. There are pies for every occasion, fancier pies, easier pies, fruit pies, chocolate pies..... on and on. There are plenty of pies that are soy free as well, and delicious cheesecakes. Tons of different crusts to try, and vegan whip!!! You will not be disappointed with this book.

But in the last 15 years, security concerns of states and the privatizing impetus of e-commerce have come to the fore and momentum has shifted in a new direction, towards private, walled domains, each vying with the other in an increasingly fragmented system, in effect a “Splinternet.”

Because the Internet today surrounds us so comprehensively, it’s easy to regard the way it functions as a simple given, part of the natural order of things. Only by stepping back and scrutinizing the evolution of the system can we see the Internet for what it is—a contested, protean terrain, constantly evolving as different forces intervene to drive it forward. What a well-informed person should know about the origins of the internet and the battleground it is today.

This is an engrossing true tale of how the quest for war-making technology led us to computers, the internet and a new frontier of conflict between nations. And it gives a behind-the-scenes look at the personalities who drove it all, from WWI to the present. Lots of research and footnotes, but with fluid and enjoyable prose. This book would make a good socio-political-historical companion to the concise book “D is for Digital” by Princeton prof Brian Kernighan; his subtitle is: “What a well-informed person should know about computers and communications.” With Splinternet, you can add: “and how it all happened.”

I recently purchased "KayakCraft" and found it to be an excellent complementary book to Nick Schade's "The Strip-Built Sea Kayak". Very little is actually repetitive from the earlier book, and it describes different building methods and systems.
The finishing and joinery techniques described will help the builder make a really professional craft.
Moore's instructions are such that the builder does not have to skimp on quality, or take shortcuts in the finished product; rather, the techniques described will allow the builder to build a quality kayak, efficiently.
The published test-panel failures for different thicknesses and materials are helpful in determining tradeoffs between the different layups.

Kayakcraft: Fine Woodstrip Kayak Construction

This book is a must in any kayak builder's library. Very well written with clear comments on each stage of kayak construction, supplemented with excellent photographs. In addition, one can find in this book a detailed instruction on the stapleless kayak construction method and a miriad of practical tips on, among others, strongback assembly, sanding techniques, decorative methods of stripping and so on. A wealth of author's experiences talk through the pages. There is one feature of this book that makes it different from other books on kayak construction. The method of construction described allows one to build a kayak completely in two parts (hull and deck, inside and outside) and join them as the very last step by a simple glueing method. I built my first kayak using a different method and ended up with a pain in the neck and lower back supplemented by contortionist's skills while trying to finish the work inside the joined deck and hull.
While there is no book that tells everything on kayak construction this one comes close as an excellent reference for a novice and experienced builders alike.
As a suplementary reading, I would strongly recomment another book by Ted Moores "Canoecraft" with its excellent coverage of wood stripping and, in particular,fiberglassing techniques.

Another class act

I don't know how anybody could go wrong buying this book ! I purchased Ted's first book Canoecraft way back in 1983 and it's covers are well worn a great book .It was the definative book at its time and I feel that Kayak Craft is the same today . If someone isn't able to build a kayak from this book ,then they aren't trying or shouldn't be trying .

I built several canoes with Ted's fist book and never bought a plan ever .

If you read thuroughly and pay attention it won't be hard.

Don't be afraid of this book . I'm glad I bought it the only way that this book could be better for me is if the very numerous and professional pictures were color . This is a very thorough book with nothing missing .

Further improvement has been made by the addition of a section on ecological engineering - the application of ecologically sound technology in ecosystems - and an appendix on environmental examination of chemicals. The problems of agricultural waste have been included in Part B, and in Chapter 6 on waste water treatment, several pages have been added about non-point sources and the application of ``soft'' technology. Throughout the book, more examples, questions and problems have been included, and several figures and tables have been added to better illustrate the text.

Finally we can "hear" HIM!

At last I'm able to read Clausius' own train of thought when deriving the concept of Entropy and at last, too, the ideas made "click", for Thermodynamics is such a strange science -simply put, it uses a motor to extract a fundamental law of nature- that I had to "hear" the voice one of the original actors of the incredible mise en scene of this body of knowledge.
Up to now, I always had a strange feeling when reading about the second law: that even though I could understand it, I was unable of "making it mine", probably because I couldn't form the idea of how somebody could have thought about infinitely close Carnot engines, the obtaining of Q/T and Equivalence of Transformations, to mention a few of his concepts.
All the deductions in modern books -although based on Clausius ideas- seemed artificial. Even after devouring Cardwell's From Watt to Clausius: The Rise of Thermodynamics in the Early Industrial Age (History of Science and Technology Reprint Series) my feelings didn't changed. Now, I'm relieved because I can follow him with peace of mind, knowing that there existed such a person, such a mind and such concomitant chain of thoughts.
�Could that be done again, in the same way, in October of 2009 and beyond?
In my search of his original papers in a language that I could read (Spanish or English), the closest I had arrived was in Magie's, A Source Book in Physics (Source Books in the History of the Sciences) but to my dismay, when he presents Clausius' paper on Entropy,(page 234),just in the most important part where I was expecting to see the author's mathematical deduction,as in a surreal dream, Magie does not include them and begins straight out with "We obtain the equation..."

About the Author
Anthony Tassinello has spent the last two decades cooking at the iconic Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, California. His passion for wood-fired cookery, baking, and pastry and cocktail culture keeps him busy all four seasons. He has foraged for wild mushrooms from Oregon to Italy, and was the foraging guide for author/food activist Michael Pollan in his acclaimed bestseller, The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Anthony’s work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, SF Magazine, The Huffington Post, NPR, and numerous cookbooks. He lives in Northern California with his girlfriend Frances, her son Bruno, and their orange cat, Rooney.

A new twist on an old favorite

Being born and raised in Chicago we LOVE Pizza!! As a family we are always on the hunt for new and exciting recipes to try. The Essential Wood Fired Pizza cookbook as so many! I liked that it is very easy to comprehand and follow any of the recipes. It also talks about different woods and how create different flavors in your pizza as well as how to maintain the heat while cooking multiple pizzas. We are trying out every single recipe in the book for our Friday night pizza nights. I have made extra standard dough to freeze for those nights when we just want a classic pizza as well as the easy pizza sauce. I have to say so far those 2 recipes are my favorite, I'm not a real "fancy" ingredient person, classic is perfect for me, but my Husband and Daughter have a more adventurous palate.

I did receive this product at a discount or free for my honest and unbiased review and that is just what I am giving. If there was anything I did not like about the product I it is noted above because I refuse to spend my money on something that doesn't work and I would not want you to either. I do try to opt in on only items I would normally purchase so that I know I have an actual use for them. That is why you will see many items that I have reviewed were given a 4 Star rating. If there is nothing substantially wrong with the item and it does what the seller states then I believe it deserves a 4 star rating. If there is an issue than I will deduct stars. But if a product blows me away – meaning its better than I expected it will get 5 stars from me!

Good interesting pizza recipes!

If you have even ever thought of having a wood-fired oven built then, your going to want to read this book. It includes all the different types of ovens, plus how they work, a list of of what your going to need, safety tips, fuel, and firing up your oven. It covers all that pretty well, even includes cleaning/maintenance, and sourcing wood. The fun part about this book is all the great recipes it includes. Now I don't have a wood-fired oven, and after reading all that one entails, I'm not sure I want one now! Regardless it does include a lot of great recipes, that I still think are very usable even if you don't have a wood-fired oven. Of course I would do a trial run on one or two of the recipes to be sure it will cook right and also to see what kind of results it gives you from just using your regular indoor oven. The book also includes pizza dough recipes as well as tips. Some of the recipes have ingredients I would never have thought of using for example butternut squash, on pizza!! I do like butternut squash but never occurred to me to use it as a pizza topping. Several I want to try now., but I don't have my bread machine anymore that is helpful with doing the dough. Guess I will be looking for a new one, because there are quite a few recipes I really want to try now!

Perfect for the Pizza Lover...even if you don't have a wood fire oven!

Pizza is a classic comfort food. You can't go wrong with Pizza and almost everyone likes some type of pizza. I am a HUGE fan of wood fire pizza. There is just something fantastic about the crust that you can't replicate with a traditional oven. However, not all of us are lucky enough to have a wood fire pizza oven readily available for us. If you do, this book is for you. This book is also for you if you want amazing recipes for different takes on the traditional pizza. I don't have a wood oven but I love the recipes in this book (and one can dream of some day having my own). The recipes in the book range from Breakfast Pizza to calzones and beyond. I'm in love with the different and creative ways to make just about anything into a pizza. Perfect for the home cook in your life! (I received this book at a discounted rate to provide an honest review. All opinions are my own).
