Why so expensive?

I don't understand why this book is so expensive. I have read it; the information is good, and yet not that difficult to find in other ways such as googling osteoporosis and calcium.

Save Your Money

This book is long on criticism, big on print, and short on supporting data or references.
It discredits much about the traditional approach to osteoporosis treatment--without giving sources or directed references to research that backs up the criticism. It also lacks supporting data for the effect of the Program on bone density or fracture risk. Maybe I missed it. If this info is in there, please direct me to it.
Strangely enough, the passage explaining how the program will benefit its audience (presumably, osteoporosis patients) does not mention bone, bone density, or fracture risk. Excerpted passage:
“Osteoporosis is in fact not really a disease but rather the body’s attempt to correct a certain biochemical imbalance in body tissues. This imbalance can be reversed by mainly following simple dietary guidelines that are explained in great detail in a later chapter.”
I missed the simple guidelines. There was a lot of nutritional info with diet suggestions, many recommended supplements, and some information about the alkaline diet, but I didn’t see a simple, straightforward Program to follow.
For some reason, the author intentionally neglected to mention anything about bone density or fracture risk in discussing what her Program will do. Odd for a program called "Save Our Bones!"
• Why might that be?
• If the author had references to solid data backing up her bold-sounding claims, why wouldn’t she include them? That would only help patients and help sell her Program.

Better for Historians and Serious Scholars?

This book did not radically change my knowledge of Henry II, but it did contribute to a more nuanced perspective of his reign. Among the gleanings: alternative views of Louis VII and Henry the Young King; the Influence of Henry and his policies on economics, law, and literary culture; refutation of various chronicler or scholarly opinions; and a fuller understanding of specific relationships and events.

The collection of thirteen essays offers readers the fruits of recent research using sources of information unavailable when Warren wrote his definitive biography in 1973. The topics explore a range of subjects, from Henry’s accession to Arthurian legend; from relations with the Church to coinage, from homage to the French king to conflicts with insular neighbors. Whether written in colorful prose or dry, forensic discussion, all of the essays provide a closer look into Henry and his world.

While differing academic opinion and updated research are welcome reading, I’m not sure the information provided in this book is worth the hefty price tag, at least for average readers like myself. Henrician historians may appreciate the minutiae of subjects like finances, coinage, and Norman aristocracy, but lay people might be better off searching for less expensive works about Henry II.

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME

4.5 rating for me because despite how awesome this was, there were quite a few technical errors.

This was an absolutely hot read with many things to fangirl over. First off, this is pretty much a perfect read for personal reasons, and because so many things screamed "OMG!" there was no way I could put it down unless sleep was forcing my eyes to roll back (at least I think it was sleep... who knows) BUT MY POINT IS: this is near perfection for this reader.

Two hot guys. A blogger. And her stories are pretty much what I do? What blogger wouldn't fall for this thing, you know? Not to mention the writing is just awesome. I loved the sarcasm and the fact that I could feel all three of them, especially Candy. It was almost like I was reading anything. Loved the things I could relate to, the drama, the suspense, the hot sexy moments- and there were a lot, trust me -but most of all, I just loved the way this book made me feel so awesome.

And who doesn't love feeling that way?

So Hot!

Candy Boys is seriously funny and oh, so very sexy! Over the top sexy! This was the first time I've read a novel by this fantastic author, and I have to say, I'll be looking for more. Candy Boys proves that dreams really can come through. The second novel, Riot, is a deeper story. Pax is looking for a way back. A way back from a horrible tragedy that has scarred her. Riot is looking for happiness, love and forgiveness. Their initial meeting doesn't bode well for either of them. You'll have to read the story to find out the rest. I guarantee you will come to love them both.

Hot, Sexy but with Heart

This is a hot sexy story about a bookish girl named Candy who fantasizes about two hot boys. She brings those hotter than heck fantasies to life in stories she posts on her blog. Little does she know that those boys have just as many fantasies about her.

This one is different from Jo's other books. It still has characters that are young and struggling through life but its also infused with humour. Its the levity that kept me reading.

These three characters are feeling through life. Learning how to adult. Professionally, sexually and emotionally. They are coming to terms with what they want in their sexual life and finding out who they are as a person. What they want in a sex partner and who they want them to be and what role they want themselves to play in that relationship. I like the insite that Jo shows in these characters and what they go through while growing into their adult worlds. It makes these characters likable.

The reason why I gave it four stars and not five is because of scene inconsistencies. It's really the only criticism I have. I kept on having the "wait what" conversation with myself. I know it's what happens when a writer gets in the groove and just writes. I really wanted to give it five because I loved the story. Loved what these three stood for. The struggle that we all go through one time in our lives when we try discover what we are and who we are. How our past fits into our present and will fit into our past. Shedding all expectations of society and become who we truly are.

exceptional range of work

I teach Native American literature. Since the publication of this book I have been unable to exclude it from my syllabus. Students almost unanimously have endorsed this choice, even when they had to shell out the money for the hardcover. Now that it is in paperback, no one should exclude it.
I only regret that an anthology of similar quality of organization, focus, and selection does not exist for male and female Native writers.

Rivers of Gold is the first in the More series of dystopian thrillers featuring MARSOC operator Everett "Ever" More and NYPD Detective Sixto Santiago. The brutal murder of a cab driver draws them into an increasingly complex investigation that eventually gives them a lead into the gang war between the party cartels. But as the case grows seedier and more dangerous, Santiago is forced to investigate his own partner, and is shocked to discover he is part of a covert CIA operation to infiltrate the NYPD. More is no cop he is something altogether more dangerous. But he is the only one Santiago can rely upon when their case leads them to the rising stars of New York s underworld, whose connections range from immigrant cab drivers to the captains of the finance industry.

I actually read the book - and it's a fantastic debut!

I hate using "page turner" in a review. But, since I'm having trouble typing this with my left hand, I think it's appropriate. My right is sprained from the speed flipping. Dunn asks just one thing - buy the premises that he sets up. Given that, hang on all the way to the conclusion. Please read the above for an ample set-up.

In a/the New York City of a few years from now, we meet the normal group of cops and drug dealers and cab drivers. Cab drivers? Yeah, and they are the cops. Or, are they the drug dealers? Both? Dunn's NYC is based on a nominally plausible projection of today's world; but extremely unlikely to occur in my reality. Your reality may vary.

I don't think there is one character in this book that I want to actually meet (no offense to those modeled after some real and presumably very nice folks). But the characters all fit into this world - and some of them are lulus. Psychiatry as a field is secure with people like these around.

There is action throughout this book and absolutely no way to catch your breath without putting the book out of sight for a while. The pursuit of justice, or whatever, is relentless and the hero's cop partner is not to be believed - but it's healthier to do so anyway. The bad guys (and gals) are very, very bad and the good guys are very, very not necessarily much better.

If you are not offended by bad language, blood, sex (obligatory, consensual, illegal, etc), drugs (illegal, etc), blood, guns, violence, and blood - then order this one. If any one or a combination of those features disturb you, you'll miss out one heck of a good book; but you don't dare risk it. There are enough folks like me to amp up the sales.

I am astounded that this is a first book and I am glad that there is ample opportunity for this to be a series. Don't worry though, this is a complete book in itself. Keep writing, Adam.

Too Many Problems To Be Great, But What a Finish!

Rivers of Gold, by Adam Dunn, is almost believable for a futuristic police novel. Almost. My main problem accepting the premise was the time period: the future was altered too much too soon. If Dunn had chosen 2023, ten years after this novel's present, I would have far less problems believing the economic mess New York has become. Once I got over that, however, I had no trouble buying into the greed and crime culture Dunn gives us.

The novel has a slow takeoff. It seems as if the first half, almost two thirds, of the story is devoted to giving us the required history lessons, network setup and character introduction. I almost get the feeling there are more books planned for this version of NYPD. Real police work can be like that, however. Long boring surveillance and background investigations until a break finally come along. Once the story takes off, however, buckle up and hold on: it is a real action packed story.

Despite the extended introductions, some of the characters still come off as flat. Oh the central characters are fully fleshed out for us, but some important secondary players are not so well done. New York City is a multilingual city and many of these secondary characters spoke something other English. Sometime the expressions were translated and other times they were not and the meaning was not subject to being figure out through context clues. In Losers' Club, many of the characters used Hispanic slang so Richard Perez, the author, included a short glossary to help non-Spanish speakers follow what was going on. This would have been even more helpful here.

Without giving away too much of the story, I think the author did not begin hitting his stride until the end of the story. I saw the irony that various government agencies were trying to take over New York as their jurisdiction, just as the various drug cartels and other underworld factions all wanted to take over New York.

While I enjoyed the story, there were too many problems to consider this much more than average. I would expect to have more action throughout the story when dealing with a cop story about a drug cartel and features a shady mercenary plying on the same team as the good guys. I'll go maybe three and quarter stars for this, mostly because of the final action sequence. The rest is BORING.

Rivers of Gold fascinates. It is a novel that in the way that a dream is a dream only after you’ve spent half the morning convincing yourself it was just a dream. You can smell NYC with each turn of the page as Dunn’s words transport you with precision to an exact place in time. It sophisticates in that it will deprive you of any na�ve notions you may be hanging on to in regard to social structure. It is an empowering and enjoyable read. Not recommended for wimps.

Buy the earlier version if you really need it for course work.

This text was required for a DNP course and provided a lot of rambling thought on the chaos of healthcare. However, there was little to no practical information about how to lead in healthcare. In fact this text is almost identical to their earlier version and I find it very sad that authors are taking advantage of students by producing "new and updated" texts every few years. I found the only thing "new and updated" in this text was the cover, the color of the text, and the titles of the chapters. Even the call out boxes were the same; just on different pages. Interesting.

I would recommend that you buy the earlier version if you really need it for course work. The content is what counts and you can pretty easily match it up by looking at the table of contents that you can find here on Amazon.

This was a required text for an Organizational Leadership course in my DNP program. I have to say that I really enjoyed this text. It provided relevant, current information for the course. As an APRN and not an administrator, I still found the material to be engaging.

Transformational Leadership

"Quantum Leadership" induces the reader to want to engage in transformational leadership to develop better leaders in the field of nursing. Each chapter includes points to lead group discussions and key points. Case studies are also available which serve as good knowledge checks. My only complaint is the writer(s) often reiterate the same point multiple times in one chapter, belaboring the subject to the point of frustration. It is as if they are afraid the reader won't understand the theme of the chapter.

About the Author
Bill T. Arnold is Director of Hebrew Studies and Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Asbury Theological Seminary. He is the author of several books, including 1 & 2 Samuel, Encountering the Book of Genesis and (with John H. Choi) A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax. He coedited The Face of Old Testament Studies.

H. G. M. Williamson is Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford University, on the faculty of The Oriental Institute and a Fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of several books and numerous articles on the Old Testament, including commentaries on 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, as well as The Book Called Isaiah and Studies in Persian Period History and Historiography.

Great source to begin research!

Over 150 articles comprise the Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books, which covers the books of Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah.

Each entry is concluded by an extensive bibliography and useful cross-references to other articles in the Dictionary Of The Historical Books.

A unique feature that enhances the readability and usefulness of this dictionary is that the entries are in reality "macro-essays" on larger categories or topics instead of separate smaller essays on the component parts. For example, "Absalom" will be found in the discussion
of "David's Family," and "Anat" under "Canaanite Gods and Religion."

The entries discuss and evaluate many of the key interpretative problems and the relevance of comparative data from literary, cultural, and archaeological sources that pertain to these biblical texts. Archaeological studies are used extensively throughout the entries, with numerous sites being treated separately in addition to their citation within other contexts.

With a wide range of backgrounds and points of view among the 120 contributors, this dictionary contains fairly even and well-balanced entries that provide a panoramic view of the present landscape in this segment of scholarly research on the historical books. It must be noted, however, that the contributors to the dictionary do not merely present but also evaluate data. While some readers no doubt will take issue with some of the interpretations of the various contributors, the entries articulate the state of the question for these issues and topics and offer new directions and interpretative possibilities for the future.

The volume concludes with three indexes: Scripture, subjects,
and articles. Whether you are a scholar, a graduate student, or a layman looking for a summation of scholarly opinion, this volume is for you!

A magnificent achievement

Editors Bill Arnold and Paul Williamson have enlisted an international cast of scholars; each addressing topics within their specialties. In the past twenty years a burgeoning list of titles addressing the historicity of the OT has appeared, thus making it necessary for a dictionary that addresses these particular concerns. With entries ranging from "agriculture" to "Zion traditions," DOTHB packs competently presented information cover-to-cover. One of the best dictionaries I have encountered.

Quality Scholarship

IVP (InterVarsity Press) has a reputation for publishing quality scholarship in the fields of Theology and Biblical Studies. The IVP Bible Dictionary Series is no exception. Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books is the second of IVP's series on the Hebrew Bible (the first: Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentatuch). IVP mostly utilizes conservative Christian scholars for the articles that comprise their dictionaries. However, often material is gathered for those articles from sources throughout Christian and Judaic scholarship. Also, each entry provides a bibliography referencing a wide range of sources for further study. Those who are interested in New Testament studies should also check out IVP's New Testament volumes in this same series, The IVP Dictionary of Theology, and Dictionary of Biblical Imagery. I personally own all of these and am awaiting the remaining, yet to be published, volumes in the Hebrew Bible series.
