About the Author
Daniel M. Bikel is a senior research scientist at Google, developing new methods for NLP and speech recognition. While at IBM, he architected the distillation system for IBM’s GALE multilingual information extraction and question-answering system. While pursuing his doctorate at Penn, he built the first extensible multilingual syntactic parsing engine.

Imed Zitouni is a senior research scientist at IBM. He has led IBM’s Arabic information extraction and data resources efforts since 2004. He previously led both DIALOCA’s Speech/NLP group and Bell Labs/ Alcatel-Lucent’s language modeling and call routing activities. His work involves machine translation, NLP, and spoken dialog systems.

Oklahoma Knew Him Well

Yes, I am on a roll in reviewing Larry McMurtry inspired works (this one is co-written with his fellow screenplay writer Diana Ossana), although the subject of this presentation, the tale of Pretty Boy Floyd the Oklahoma dustbowl outlaw from the Depression-era 1930's, has always had a certain personal appeal unlike some previously reviewed McMurtry anti-heroes. The name Pretty Boy Floyd is well known to me from my youth listening to Okalahoma- born Woody Guthrie on a folk music program that I tuned into on the radio in the early 1960's. The tale that Woody told played into (and still plays into) my attraction toward Robin Hood-type figures (whether truly so or not) as part of the American struggle against the old time capitalist bosses and their bankers. Take this line - "Some will rob you with a six-gun, some with a fountain pen". Sound familiar today?

Of course the reality, as the plot in this book makes abundantly clear, is that these so-called heroic figures tend to either have feet of clay or have been glorified through sheer "trade-puffing" publicity agents, voluntary or otherwise. Nor is Pretty Boy alone in that category. On a scholarly level the late British Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawn spent the early part of his professional career investigating these types in his seminal work, Primative Rebels, and in other sociological monograms on the subject of social bandits. But enough of the scholarly because what our two authors have attempted to do here is to take a little away from that heroic notion and tell the tale as it more probably happened- including the boredom and monotony of everyday life even for well-known outlaws.

Pretty Boy's tale is standard 1930's stuff. Nothing doing at home except hard words, hard work, no pay and no adventure on the old homestead. That's 1930's Oklahoma in a nutshell. So off to the big city to learn a trade. The trade being robbing banks. Every profession has its rules and etiquette and as the authors tell this tale we are treated to some insights into those customs. But mainly it is set up the job, avoid getting shot and get away fast. If not, then jail, the hangman or shot down in some dark alley. Of course, this would not be a McMurtry-inspired novel if there was not a ton of sex, longings for sex or exasperations with sex. That, I might add, is true as well for those of us who are not social bandits. This is a decent read from a period that kind of marked off the Old West from the new-Tommy guns and fast cars did not figure in those Old West tales, right?

Alright for bed-time!

If you want to learn about the gangster/outlaw breed of Pretty Boy, Ma Barker, Baby Face, etc., & understand more about the forces that created them, forget about this book. Any story told in a pure narrative style, like this one, naturally lends itself to embellishments of the truth, wild assumptions & a good few gross exagerations. This one is no exception. The fact that certain characters' feelings & thoughts in their final moments of their death throws, are clinically & vividly described, says it all. Bottom line with Charley Floyd is that he thought himself too good to become a poor farmer & proved himself incapable of success at any other activity, legal or illegal. He was a thieving, violent, adulterous & under-achieving cry-baby, who, as we see from his choice of cranky, miserable & homicidal side-kicks (Birdwell excepted), was also an awful judge of character. The author however, paints him in such tender tones, that when Pretty Boy's tacky, unsuccessful life of crime comes to it's predictible violent close, I am half expecting to read in the book's Epilogue, of his elevation to sainthood. His great gifts were his good looks & his immense charm, especially with women. What a shame he didn't move West to take part in the then burgeoning Hollywood film industry, or even try his hand as a door-to-door saleman. He was an absolute natural for either. Be that as it may, the narrative style is racy & exciting. The chapters are short, making this a very undemanding, entertaining bed-time read. Sadly, the flimsyness of the content is likely to leave you real hungry in the morning!

Quick Read. But lots of great story!

This is a quickie....hehehe. It's a short story that is jam packed with fun characters, witty dialog, and a hot sexy roommate. What could be better than that?? Lexi is one lucky girl. Don't let the length of this book discourage you. You still get the depth of the characters and a great story that will have you yelling at the author wanting more immediately!!! I am SOOO ready for Travis' story next!!!

Roomies

I downloaded Roomies as a free novella from Amazon. While not horrible, this novella was redundant, re-using a lot of the same phrases, some descriptions made no sense (how do panties gush, anyway?). Lexi was fairly clueless which made the read somewhat frustrating.

Chapter One: Rock the Boat

She was always a hard worker. Always. That was just her.

The weather said nothing.

It was another perfect day on Abaco, a tiny island in the Bahamas about 200 miles northeast of Miami. The weather was warm, the sky was smiling and so was Aaliyah. She had every reason to be happy. The young singer's new album, the self-titled Aaliyah, was a hit. It had debuted high on the Billboard charts and had received rave reviews from the likes of TIME, Spin, and Vibe magazines. The veteran music publication Rolling Stone had given the new CD four stars, declaring that "on Aaliyah, a near-flawless declaration of strength and independence, she ups the ante for herself and her contemporaries -- as well as her musical heroes. Aaliyah is Control, Velvet Rope, and Jagged Little Pill all rolled into one."

Aaliyah had other reasons to be happy as well. Recently, she had secretly become engaged to Damon Dash, the co-CEO of Roc-a-Fella records, a leading hip-hop label and the home to Jay-Z and a number of other top rappers. The pair had refused to comment on their relationship to the press, but it was an open secret among their friends and close fans. Dash and Aaliyah were often seen out on the town, sometimes in Harlem, sometimes in the Hamptons, always smiling, laughing, clearly enjoying one another's company. Their engagement wasn't formal -- few things are in the hip-hop world -- but Dash planned on marrying his new sweetheart as soon as time opened up in her busy schedule for them to do it up right. Meanwhile, they were living the life, having a good time: the newest prince and princess of hip-hop nightlife.

Aaliyah's schedule, however, was punishing. She had long ago set her sights on being a total entertainer -- a star of both concert stages and movie screens -- and the commitment required sacrifice. She was now working hard to make sure her new album had a long shelf life and had come to the Bahamas to film a video for her latest single, a song titled "Rock the Boat." Filming for the video kicked off in Miami on August 22nd, and it required some difficult underwater shots. After that part of the shoot, Aaliyah and about a dozen of her associates flew down to the Bahamas to complete the project.

It was a loose-knit, jovial group. Everybody was working hard, but everyone was having a good time. Gina Smith, 30, born in Fort Worth, Texas but living in New Jersey, had recently come on board Team Aaliyah as product manager for Aaliyah's label, Blackground Records. Aaliyah had called Smith herself when she got the job, which entailed living, breathing, and sleeping Aaliyah's music and making sure it got a deserving amount of publicity from the press and attention from radio stations. Smith worked in New York, but never lost her southern courtliness.

Then there was Eric Foreman, 29, of Hollywood, who was Aaliyah's hairstylist. He was known as a funny man, the kind of guy that kept everybody laughing; the kind of guy who, one wild night in Atlanta, climbed up on stage at a club and performed his own all-in-fun, improptu strip tease that was, by one report, far more entertaining that anything else on stage that evening.

There was also makeup artist Christopher Maldonado, 32, of New York. He wasn't the regular makeup guy, but he was best friends with Aaliyah's makeup artist who, while tied up in Europe with Macy Gray, had dispatched his pal Maldonado to fill his slot. Maldonado was the opposite of Foreman: He was laid back and calm, always collected, never excited, taking life as it comes. He liked to party as much as the next guy, but he was always cool about it.

Protecting Aaliyah was her 6-foot 8-inch, 300-pound bodyguard Scott Gallin, 41, of Pompano Beach, Florida. Gallin was a big guy, but was, by all accounts, a friendly and caring one as well. He was a divorced dad who had custody of his 15-year-old son, Lyle, to whom he was devoted. He had worked as a bouncer in various joints around South Florida, but he was an aspiring actor as well, and had appeared in small roles in the movies Any Given Sunday and Holy Man. As a bodyguard he was in high demand -- Ricky Martin, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell had used his services in the past. He was the kind of full-service, beyond-the-call-of-duty bodyguard who, if the client was out of town, would call up the client's spouse, just to make sure they were okay. Right now he was totally focused on his current employer, Aaliyah. Nothing bad would happen to her as long as he could help it.

So with that cast of characters, the shoot was bound to be a good time. What's not to enjoy about being in the Bahamas on a beautiful day? What's not to love about dancing on a 72-foot catamaran as it glides through clear Caribbean waters? You can feel the joy when you see scenes of the video: Aaliyah's on a beach, the ocean stretched out behind her; Aaliyah wearing a sexy red top, and dancing slyly, suggestively, playfully before the cameras. "It was a fun shoot," said Annie Russell, a local taxi operator who organized a squad of drivers to assist the video crew. "Everybody in that group was getting along fine, like they loved one another." The first day Aaliyah arrived, she and Gallin asked Russell where they could rent some motorscooters. Clearly work and play were going to mix on this trip.

The video was helmed by one of the best directors in the business: Hype Williams. When you wanted a hit video, when you wanted a clip that the suburbs would groove to but the streets would respect, you signed up Hype. In the past, Williams had worked with Busta Rhymes, the Notorious B.I.G., and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. That video with Missy Elliott in the puffy costume? ("Supa Dupa Fly [The Rain]" if you don't know). That's Hype. That video with Sean "P. Diddy" Combs in the shiny suit? ("Been Around the World"). That's Hype.

Work started that day around 10 A.M. The video went off like any other. Lots of stops and starts. Lots of makeup touch-ups. Lots of adjustments to the lighting. Aaliyah never complained. That wasn't her style. "Lots of people in this business are hard to work with," says one publicist who worked with Aaliyah. "She's always professional. She's always, what do you need me to do, how can I help. She never takes a star trip. She's an angel. She's like an angel sent down to earth." That day, Aaliyah was in nearly all of the shots: after all, it was her video. But instead of retiring to her cabin after her scene, she would stay and watch the other shots, observing the process and supporting everyone else.

Around 2 P.M. everyone broke for lunch. Around 5 P.M. they were all done. Aaliyah washed off her makeup and prepared to leave. She signed a few autographs and then got into a cab. "Bye! See you all later!" she cheerfully called out to Russell and a few of the others who had come to say their farewells.

And why shouldn't she have been happy? She had work to do, but it was work she loved. She had commitments to keep back in the States, but she was looking forward to keeping them. She had cool music in the works, including a collaboration with hip-hop/folk star Beck called "I Am Music" that her longtime creative partner, Timbaland, was producing. Her movie career was taking off. She had recently finished filming The Queen of the Damned, a movie based on the Anne Rice novel. The big screen adaptation starred Aaliyah as the title character, an ancient -- but eternally youthful -- vampire. She had also signed on to star in not just one, but two sequels to the action franchise The Matrix. She was set to take some martial arts training and then fly down to Australia to begin filming.

But even before that she had a date with MTV. She was going to be a presenter at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. It was the party everyone wanted to be at -- U2, OutKast, No Doubt, Nelly, Janet Jackson, they were all scheduled to be there. Aaliyah just wanted to get back to Florida and then New York City so she could hook up with Dash, chill for a little bit, and then start doing the things she needed to do. The first order of business, however, was to get off Abaco and out of the Bahamas. She'd had a good time, but now it was time to roll.

Aaliyah, along with Maldonado, Smith, Foreman, Gallin, three other passengers, and the pilot, Luis Morales III, boarded a twin-engine Cessna 402B.

The plane rolled down the runway.

It was Saturday, August 25, 2001.

It was a warm day. The sky was smiling.

Disaster was moments away.

The weather said nothing.

Gives a bit more insight; helps with the healing process

I read this in one day; it's an easy read, and still feeling the loss over Aaliyah that I do, I had no desire to put it down. Farley (obviously being a TIME writer) does a very nice job here. He gives background, not just on Aaliyah but on a good deal of music history that influenced Aaliyah and her generation. There is not a great deal in here that fans have not read in newspapers or heard on MTV and the like, but what Farley does do is offer a point for fans to begin healing. Farley offers at a point in the book, Why Aaliyah? What is the meaning behind it? I honed in on this because I can't count how many times I questioned God on this. He writes, "What is the answer to the riddle of tragedy... Simply by caring, by connecting emotionally to [this] event we give [it] meaning. In other words, the search for meaning itself can be meaningless. We create the meaning ourselves; what we take from such experiences is entirely in our own hands."
Farley clearly had a deep respect and like for Aaliyah and it shows. This is a very intelligently and thoughtfully written piece. I did learn a few new things, which I was happy about. Aaliyah, as Farley states, will never become a has-been, some aging soul star doing jigs onstage with the likes of a Justin Timberlake type. (I like Timberlake, but the point is well made.) Aaliyah is forever perfect; God never gave her an opportunity to mess up, to wrinkle, to be forgotten. He really exhalted her higher than she would have ever been down here on earth, where us carnal folk revel in the screw ups of those famous and privledged few. She is forever beautiful, talented and respected. Her spirit will always be gentle, her smile always bright. Farley, thanks for taking the time to do this, I appreciate it and I know Aaliyah's fans will too. It means a lot to know you cared enough to help us understand this wonderful young woman a little bit more. To Aaliyah's family, I am always praying for you! She was the best!!!!!

Please don't waste your time or money

Okay,I am a Aalyiah fan, and I am a person who loves to read. So when this book came out I ran to get it. I would not recommend this book to anyone who has cable or internet access. The information in this book was stuff that I could see on E's true hollywood story or VH1's behind the music or visiting a website. This book did not offer anything we already didn't know about Aaliyah. So if you have cable or internet, don't get it. It was rushed and hurried. I think the person who wrote the book was looking for a quick dollar. If a book is going to come out, it should be written or influenced by those who KNEW her.

wonderfull book about a wonderful star

I think all r&b music fans can agree that aaliyahs death was a tradegy. She will be greatly missed. It was obvious there would be plenty of tributes and books for her. The first and best aaliyah book is More than a woman by Christopher John Farley. Wonderfully written and put together. Great pictures too. Only thing is the cursing here and there not a major problem but MF word comes up a few times. But simply a fantastic book. I learned some things i never knew.You will basicly learn about her life her music movies friends family and even about the music industry in general. The perfect book for the ultimate aaliyah fan.

About the Author
David S. Hage is a professor of analytical and bioanalytical chemistry in the
Department of Chemistry at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He received his
B.S. in chemistry and biology from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, his Ph.D.
in analytical chemistry from Iowa State University, and he was a postdoctoral fellow
in clinical chemistry at the Mayo Clinic. He is a full professor at the University
of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Dr. Hage is the author of over 145 research publications, reviews and book
chapters. He recently edited a book entitled the Handbook of Affinity
Chromatography (Taylor Francis) and is a coauthor on the textbook Chemistry: An
Industry-Based Introduction (CRC Press). He received the 1995 Young
Investigator Award from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and
the 2005 Excellence in Graduate Education Award from the University of
Nebraska, Lincoln. He was made a Bessey Professor of Chemistry in 2006 at the
University of Nebraska.


James D. Carr is a professor of analytical chemistry in the Department of
Chemistry at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He received his B.S. in chemistry
from Iowa State University and his Ph.D. in chemistry from Purdue
University. He was then a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill. He is a full professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
Dr. Carr is the author of approximately 50 research publications and articles.

He is the coauthor of Chemistry: A World of Choices (McGraw-Hill), a liberal arts
general chemistry textbook. He is also the author or coauthor of several versions
of general chemistry and quantitative analysis lab manuals and study guides (gen
chem only). He has won several teaching awards, including the University of
Nebraska Distinguished Teaching Award in 1981; University of Nebraska
Recognition Awards for Contributions to Students in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and
2000; and the University of Nebraska Outstanding Teaching and Instructional
Creativity Award in 1996. He is a member of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln
Academy of Distinguished Teachers and received the Distinguished Teacher
Award from the Nebraska Teaching Improvement Council in 2001.

Why was this textbook even published?

We already have three excellent-to-very-good undergraduate analytical chemistry texts on the market - Harris (ISBN 146413538X), Skoog (ISBN 0495558281) and Christian (ISBN 0470887575). All 3 have been around forever and are now refined to the point of near perfection.

A recent entrant has already tried to penetrate this market and failed: David Harvey's "Modern Analytical Chemistry" (ISBN 0072375477), which is a book I strongly like. Do yourself a favor & hunt down a used copy of that or download the revised 2nd edition in PDF from the author's website at Depauw U. Why pay for a textbook when something so good is available for free?

If you look at the table of contents of Hage & Carr (below) and compare it to the above "big 3" you'll see there's hardly any difference. Every book covers the same material in pretty much the same way.

Other things not to like about this book:

1. the price, for one. Ouch. It's just too expensive for what it is. And if you want the solutions manual - guess what? - that's another $70.

2. The text is presented in two columns on every page. Hence, the information density is very high. I'll guess this was done to reduce the page count but it really hurts readability. The authors and publisher should study their competitor, Daniel Harris, and see why he's so enjoyable to read: besides his skill as a writer, his books are well-presented with wide margins which make effective use of whitespace. These are not trivial points to consider when it comes to textbook design.

3. Why was all this instrumental analysis material included in what should be a book on basic quantitative analysis? See my review of David Harvey's book for my low opinion of that practice.

There must be a better option.

Very poor at explaining most things. Mentions the existence of methods and concepts but doesn't explain them, then has questions about them at the end of the chapter. Vague, generalized blurbs don't promote a deep understanding of the subject. Normally I can clarify my confusion by careful and thoughtful reading. Not so with this book. Between organic, inorganic, and p chem, this is the worst chem book I've used. The further I get, the more confident I feel in my opinion.

The book is the best choice for studying analytical chemistry. It commbines the stuff from Analytical textbooks by Harris and Skoogg presents it in a very understandable manner.
