Thought Provoking

These books are very well written. I applaud the author. However, I don't believe they are for everyone. My feeling is that these books are aimed at a mature female audience. There are issues that come up in these stories that make for very hard reading, as they should. At the same time, all women should be made aware of these practices that are definitely meant to put women "in their place."

Overall, I'm very glad I took the time to read these stories and wouldn't hesitate to read more by this author.

Loved the "Color Purple" novel section

Loved the "Color Purple" novel section... as I also did the movie. The other 2 novels sections, I found to be confusing and hard to read. Too many changes of characters and "jumping" from time periods. Determination of which character and whether past, present, or future events....
were overwhelming for clarity of the stories and plot! At times...had to muddle through to finish.

Very smooth and fluid transition thru the reading of the three novels. I really enjoyed reading about Cecile and her family. The narrative oo the novels was beautiful, it just drew me in I had to keep reading. Recommend for any one who enjoy reading a good novel.

Space Scout Rocks!

When I first encountered Space Scout, I was unimpressed by the simplistic cover art. There were no reviews. However the synopsis WAS intriguing, so I took a chance.

This is the story of a lone Space Scout who is on a mission to discover habitable worlds for colonization. Due to an error in navigation, his ship's drive detaches and explodes. This is because he passed too near a planet's gravitational influence.

When he is able to get closer to the planet, Paul discoveres that it is, indeed, habitable. Upon closer inspection, he detects signs or recent habitation by an unknown species. He investigates.

The story is about his adventures, the dangers he faces and the beings he meets. There is much mystery and intrigue to be had.

Space battles with aliens seem to be inevitable. One thing he didn't count on, was falling in love. Who would have thought that affairs of the heart would ruin a perfectly good space opera? Well, this one wasn't ruined by it at all.

This is a wonderful story and mostly unhindered by editing and spelling errors. What errors there are do not put off the reader at all. Not like some stories I've read.

Give this one a try, you'll like it.

When I first looked at this book, there were no reviews. Reading the description I was torn because I am a sucker for this type of plot. The price was Good but I've got stuck with a lot of bad books by new author's. As I said I'm a sucker for this type of plot so I purchased the book. I was pleasantly surprised by the content. It was a smooth narrative with a good flow to the story. There were not any overly obvious issues with spelling and the like, in fact I did not notice any at all.

The story as a good flow and great pacing. It is a book that you can easily get into and loose time with. The plot develops well over time and I am hoping there will be more. Well done.

Buck Rogers plays Robinson Crusoe

Buck Rogers does Robinson Crusoe. Lone space scout gets stranded far from earth, meets aliens, and hops into bed with the first female alien he meets. I'm really sorry I actually read the entire book. The "Deus Ex Machina" ending was particularly bad. The author spends the entire book spinning a convoluted problem and at the last instant, an alien military fleet arrives and solves everything. That ending device was pathetic 2,200 years ago when some Greek playwrights tried it. It has no place in modern fiction.

Descriptive Content & Pictures

I ordered this textbook for a college level Atmospheric Sciences class, though to be honest the book is easy and concise enough to be used at the high school level. The book itself is a bit large, but the larger pages don't mean longer, boring chapters, they mean more pictures! And the pictures really are beautiful (even more so because the book is printed on nice paper) and when needed, highly informative.

Important words are in bold, chapters have midway review points to help summarize content as well as final chapter summaries, and there are also practice questions if that interests you. The back of the book even contains a high-quality laminated pull out cloud chart for easy cloud identification.

I purchased this version of the book over the newest edition because of vast price differences. My professor said that either would be sufficient, so my guess is that it's another one of those "new editions" that contains the bear minimum requirements for the publisher to actually print it as a new edition. My guess is that unless you are going to be answering questions out of the book (which may or may not be different), you could easily go with an older edition and still get the same level of educational content.

The BEST Book on the Subject for Beginners!

This is the best book I've ever read on the subject. Too often, authors put the cart before the horse by touching on subjects the book hasn't covered yet, forcing the reader to page ahead and read about what's being talked about so he can go back and understand what should have been explained to him 100 pages earlier. This book has beautiful illustrations and photographs, and is the easiest, by being the CLEAREST, book to grasp by anyone who wants to learn about the weather. Everything is discussed in an orderly fashion, and the style of writing is engaging enough to make topics, which might otherwise be boring, extremely fascinating. There is constant LIFE running through these pages.

This book manages to walk the line between heavy science and simplicity, making the reader feel at ease by being able to understand complicated subjects without feeling like he is being treated like a child.

I cannot recommend this book strongly enough, and if it weren't for the fact that I had to stop so I could take in what I was learning, I would not have been able to put it down.

Great Book For Professionals or Just A Weather Enthusiast

I'm a meteorologist and was tutoring at the local community college and this book is great to help explain things that are tough to do without pictures or that their professor just didn't cover enough. Many times I've had students use diagrams in this book instead of the one they were give to better understand things. Even if you're a professional and need some basic refreshers occasionally, I highly recommend this book to anyone no matter your understanding of weather.

Too bland.

Stefano has some amazing art, and I am a fan of his style. However, the content in this book is a bit disappointing when it comes to this kind of art. Basically most of it is pictures such as the girl on the cover...on one side it has her looking normal, and the other it has her with her bra or panties missing, sometimes both. Because of this it looks really odd because she appears to be fully clothed except it's like he forgot to draw her bra or panties on...it just doesn't look right. Later in the book he adds sketches that add a little more to the otherwise bland book. Also, like some other books I bought from this publisher, it is freakishly short, hence the cheap price of it over Amazon. If you like the art style from the cover, it might be worth looking into if you've never seen his art. But ultimately this book was a bit disappointing because it didn't really deliver...you're likely to flip through it once, be disappointed, and then put it back down and never touch it again.

More about management than leadership....

Maybe when this book was written (in the late 1970s) people didn't distinguish management from leadership. I read this book as part of a class on Christian leadership, and though this is recognized as a classic, it was not as good as several other books in that regard.

If you're looking at leadership from a Christian perspective you might consider: Transforming Leadership: Jesus' Way of Creating Vision, Shaping Values & Empowering Change, and Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness 25th Anniversary Edition.

However, if you are really interested in developing management skills for use in a Christian organizational context, this might yet be a good book for you. Just remember, this book is a bit dated in some of it's workplace references....

Successfully Integrates Biblical Thought and Secular Theory

Engstrom has written an excellent book on a topic not many have able to accomplish: how to integrate the Bible with secular theory.
Among the important points Engstrom makes include:
1. What biblical leadership is and is not.
2. A true leader must not be driven for the thirst for power.
3. A mark of maturity is the ability to handle conflict.
4. Suggestions on how to improve your attitude and those who follow you.
5. For a leader to excel, he must find other interests outside his job (family, friends, hobbies, etc.).
6. A leader will be effective when he adopts goal-setting and planning as a personal style of life.
7. Using creative problem-solving.
8. A Christian leader must point others to Christ instead of himself.
Read and be encouraged and challenged to become a better leader!

This is a priceless overview of leadership styles, strategies and personality traits. Its real-life examples make it an effective teaching tool for leadership development. Engstrom clearly presents Biblical strategies for improving management and human relations. Every Christian leader should have this book on the shelf.

About the Author
Jerry V. Diller has been teaching for over 30 years at all levels of higher education. He has been on the faculty of at The Wright Institute, University of California at Berkeley, University of Oregon, and Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. He was awarded the "Innovation of the Year Award" for teaching at Lane Community College. In his private practice he has been a partner in Multicultural Associates, a consulting and training organization focusing on issues of cultural diversity and social justice.

Jean Moule is Assistant Professor of Early Childhood and Adult Education and the "Immersion" Program Coordinator at Oregon State University. Jean began her higher education journey with a major in Art and a minor in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. She received a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon and her doctorate from Oregon State University with a dissertation titled "My Journey with Preservice Teachers: Reflecting on Teacher Characteristics that Bridge Multicultural Education Theory and Classroom Practice."

Excellent resource for educators

I have assigned this book, or parts of it, in my courses at the university level. My students have found it to be clearly written and helpful in understanding the basic concepts of cultural competence. Although some people often take a defensive posture on these issues (see excellent article by Jean Olson called Detour-Spotting), most of my students are there to learn to be teachers, so, thankfully, they maintain an open mind. The book explains terms, gives examples, and synthesizes research. It is not as dense as some other texts on this topic, and is more cohesive than some of the excellent edited volumes available. For those reasons, it is a good introductory text.

Practical Book for Teachers!

I'm using this text as a required book for my multicultural education course. I'm enjoying it because it presents the material in a way that beginning students can understand, it provides practical frameworks such as the cultural iceberg, and it gives students ideas on how to deal with different issues in the classroom and in real life. For example, it introduces microaggressions (the kind of subtle racism that is more common today) and then gives them language to disrupt it in a non-confrontational manner. The text covers the most common cultural groups present in schools and how to be more culturally aware and self-aware as a teacher.

As in any multicultural education text, it may rub some whites the wrong way. This is inevitable, in my experience, and I work one on one with irritated students to explore those feelings, decide the meaning of them, and help them learn to be culturally competent white educators. I think there is a place for all of us at the table, and we each have valuable contributions in this area--that is why I work closely and sincerely with students who are frustrated by this topic in general.

Each chapter ends with practical tips for all grade levels (K-12). This has been a missing piece for me in multicultural education text, and that is one of the main reasons I chose this texts. We all benefit from immediate application.
