Nice Handwritten book in Affordable price

This book is totally Hand written by the author, Going through the book is more like reading a diary than a coin catalog. The coins are Hand-Drawn (pretty neat though). I was surprised to see so many varieties of coins in such small book. The coins are mostly covered for Delhi/Bengal Sultanate, Indian Princely States. Nice book for the amount i paid and i refer it once in a while. A good addition to my south asian version of Krause Catalog.

Essential Historical Background

Valentine wrote his book decades ago when ancient Indian coins were available in plenty and there were no takers. Thus the range of coins available to him was great, and many of these coins are no longer seen in the Indian numismatic market. Thus this book provides an essential historical background to the study of the copper coins, a background that is difficult to create today.

I very strongly recommend this book to enthusiasts and researchers in Indian numismatics.

NOTE: the entire book is handwritten, but the handwriting is very neat and easy to read.

ROBERT SCHOLES, professor of modern culture and media at Brown University, is a distinguished teacher and a leading scholar in literary studies. He has published many influential books and articles, including The Rise and Fall of English: Reconstructing English as a Discipline (1998); Protocols of Reading (1989); and Textual Power: Literary Theory and the Teaching of English (1985), which won the Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize of the Modern Language Association in 1986 and the David H. Russell Research Award from NCTE in 1988. Scholes is a contributor of numerous articles and book reviews to learned journals, literary magazines, and weekly reviews. His Bedford/St. Martin's publications include The Practice of Writing, Fifth Edition (2001) with Nancy R. Comley and Janice Peritz, and Fields of Reading: Motives for Writing, Sixth Edition (2001) with Nancy R. Comley, David Hamilton, Carl H. Klaus, and Nancy Sommers.

Great Approach for Teaching Writing

This book takes some getting used to. I tried it once with mixed success, and didn't try it again for awhile. But I kept thinking about what it offered, its "mystory" approach in which authors immerse themselves in their subjects and write work that is not necessarily objective, but more illuminating for its passionate commitment. So eventually I started teaching the method again, and it elicited absolutely the best writing from college freshmen and sophomores that I have ever had in my classes. Once the teacher understands both the method and the elasticity of the method, it is, well . . . a beautiful thing. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly, though I might want to caution the teacher to live with the book for a few months or even a year before they begin using it in classes. It's an exciting leap.

I absolutely loved this book! I originally purchased it for a college course I needed to take, but ended up falling in love with it and still have it to this day! Text Book contains snippets of writing from various authors along with information by other authors about the original snippet. Text Book helped me to think critically and also offered writing exercises that I felt drastically improved my writing and my understanding of the literature. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in literature as a whole. I think every English major should have this book!

Cosimo de' Medici (13891464), the fabulously wealthy banker who became the leading citizen of Florence in the fifteenth century, spent lavishly as the city's most important patron of art and literature. This remarkable book is the first comprehensive examination of the whole body of works of art and architecture commissioned by Cosimo and his sons. By looking closely at this spectacular group of commissions, we gain an entirely new picture of their patron and of the patron's point of view. Recurrent themes in the commissions-from Fra Angelico's San Marco altarpiece to the Medici Palace-indicate the main interests to which Cosimo's patronage gave visual expression. Dale Kent offers new insights and perspectives on the individual objects comprising the Medici oeuvre by setting them within the context of civic and popular culture in early Renaissance Florence, and of Cosimo's life as the leader of the Medici lineage and the dominant force in the governing elite. From the wealth of available documentation on Cosimo de' Medici's life, the author considers how Cosimo's own experience influenced his patronage; how the culture of Renaissance Florence provided a common idiom for the patron, his artists, and his audience; what he preferred and intended as a patron; and how focusing on his patronage of art alters the image of him that is based on his roles as banker and politician. Cosimo was as much a product as a shaper of Florentine society, Kent concludes. She identifies civic patriotism and devotion as the main themes of his oeuvre and argues that religious imperatives may well have been more important than political ones in shaping the art for which he was responsible and its reception.

Cosimo and Renaissance Patronage

As an art history student working on a thesis concerning the patronage of the Medici family, I have found this monumentally intellectual work to be the best source of both information and explanation, articulately and interestingly stated. I have read at least 40 books, and many many papers written on this subject, none as well done as Ms. Kent. She looks at patronage from a completely different standpoint than almost anybody else has done and worked it beautifully. The fact that the spiritual feeling of the day has been understudied and overlooked and undervalued is very clear and makes the patronage of the Medici very understandable indeed.
Thank you so much Ms. Kent for making my thesis easier to write and giving me so much information I haven't found elsewhere. It is for a colleague of yours. If only I could be as articulate as you, I would be very happy indeed.
I highly recommend this book to any student of Art History who has an interest in the Renaissance.

This is a gorgeously illustrated and beautifully written exploration of Cosimo's patronage and the political, civic, and religious motivations for his many commissions. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the Renaissance or art patronage.

I'm one of Kent's students. The introduction is perhaps the most interesting of all: this is a woman who has an intimate knowledge of the Medici. Then again, this book reads like one big Tabloid newspaper: it is a collection of gossip between the family Medici the most powerful family in Renaissance Florence. The unsinkable Cosimo d' Medici wrote volumes of personal correspondence that was never intended to see the light of day. Except this book exposes the family.
It's truly a piece of humanist thinking and worth your florins

About the Author

Peter E. Murray, BSc (Hons), PhD (Endodontics and Oral Biology), is a Professor of Endodontics at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. He has spent his career working as an endodontic researcher and instructor in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His research has been sponsored by endodontic associations, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and dental companies. Dr. Murray has published more than 150 articles, book chapters, and research abstracts. He has been instrumental in developing cutting-edge regenerative endodontic therapies that help to expand the scope of endodontics into healing and regeneration. In 2013, the American Association of Endodontists recognized the significance of Dr. Murray’s contributions to the science and art of endodontology by honoring him with the Ralph F. Sommer Award.

Immensely pleasurable, thought provoking, intellectually enriching

I'm surprised to find myself, a lifelong lefty, recommending a book on conservatism (with both big and small Cs), but I think it broadens the liberal mind to realise that not everyone who subscribes to right-of-centre views is either stupid or evil — and Douglas, who is a classic right winger, has a luminous intellect and is scrupulously moral. Douglas is an old school patriot of a kind that has long gone out of fashion: the intellectual love child of Edmund Burke and Christopher Hitchens. His prose is refreshingly lucid and sincere and infused with a stop-fiddling-while-London-burns sense of urgency. I disagree with some of the stances he takes in the book and was quite surprised by his fervent defence of the Anglican church, its belief system and its faith-based Anglican schools, since he is an atheist. But, on some issues, I believe he is absolutely spot on: especially in chapter 3, which deals with Islamism, and in his scathing debunking of moral relativism. This is old-fashioned oratory at its best: a bracing antidote to political correctness, Orwellian doublespeak, spin and academic obscurantism. Whether or not you subscribe to his views (and I don’t always), he’s worth taking seriously. And if you love good writing, he’s an enormous pleasure to read.

Well Researched and Intellectually Satisfying.

Murray does an excellent job of demonstrating the broad foundational conceptions of the ideology by virtue of historical chronology, philosophical application, and the political implications involved. He also discusses at great length the esoteric nature of the ideology in relation to the popular misconceptions of it which are pervasive. Neoconservatism offers a dynamic, cohesive, and comprehensive vision for the future that is premised out of the realities of the modern era, and the eternal rights which were self-evident to the founding fathers of America. Unlike mainstream conservatism, neoconservatism is not fixated on the politics of nostalgia but is in contrast almost entirely focused on the future, and has a captivating, intellective, as well as convincing vision for it. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of neoconservatism is the intellectual diversity within the ideology that is only binded together by a broad set of principles that all neoconservatives agree upon.

A criticism would be that Murray only briefly touches upon the famed 'New York Intellectuals' which Irving Kristol was a part of, and never directly mentions them specifically from what I can remember. Additionally, Murray could have spent more time discussing the intellectual evolution of Kristol from his original far-left ideological predilections, which were predominant early in his life.

Fantastic

Murray gives a brief history of Neoconservatism before explaining why we need the doctrine now more than ever. With events in Syria and Egypt spiraling out of control, this is a timely wake-up call for American conservatives.
