Belongs in your library

George Simon has a genius for organization. He takes a complicated subject of human behavior and breaks it down to easily understandable subtopics, exploring the gamut of character traits from neurosis to psychopathy. He gives simple, easy to follow strategies for dealing with the manipulative people in our lives, whether they are patients or relatives. He even addresses the concerns of people who have rid themselves of the disturbed character that plagued them and suggests ways to move on.

I was particularly impressed with his chapter on the process of character development and his conclusions as to how character - or the lack of it - affects everyone in our society at every level. It's the most pressing issue of our day, yet seems to be the most ignored.

Personally, I found the book engaging because I have read multiple works on psychopathy, abusers, victimology, narcissism, etc., even scanning the DSM IV on and off for years trying to pin-point the pathology of a disturbed character in my life. He didn't fit into any of the boxes in any of the books. Finally, in Simon's first book, "In Sheep's Clothing," I found my answer. I was thrilled to find an author who understood those people who do have a conscience but act as if they don't because it is so underdeveloped, and who could explain to me how to deal with them.

By the way, if you've read the 1-star review (I always start with the lowest review, myself) you'll probably have come the conclusion I did: that the reviewer has...issues. Yes, Simon does say that disturbed characters refuse to submit to any authority, because they want what they want now in the easiest way, and they want to "win." They have great insight, and understand that others in our culture submit to a "God," a "higher authority," or the will of "society." They just refuse to do so. So yes, the word "God" is in the book, along with many other words.

Laypersons and professionals will both benefit from this book. Enjoy!

Dispelling the myths about mental illness

The time for this book is way past overdue, and Simon's subtitle couldn't be more appropriate. Character disturbance is the phenomenon of our age, plain and simple. What does that mean? Well, in a nutshell, Dr. Simon defines character disturbance (and their more intense form of character disorders, which includes psychopathy) as the degree to which people LACK specific virtues, ethics, social conscientiousness, and commitment to social behaviour worthy of respect. It is the degree to which a person evades personal responsibility, feels entitled to things they have not earned, lies, cheats, cons, and steals. The problem is, our society has become so inured in these narcissistic patterns, to see them for what they are is as difficult as asking a fish about water. They are our new norms, rewarded in business and daily life, while true character is derided as weakness and out of date.

This book is just full of gems and is probably the best primer on manipulation tactics I've read. Simon makes the difference between neurosis and character disturbance very clear and shows how they need totally different techniques in order to correct. The old psychological concepts that were developed in order to deal with neurosis are the ones that are out of date, and are totally ineffective when it comes to poor character. They also lead to a culturally self-reinforcing blindness, where we treat people with extreme character disorders as if they just lacked 'self-esteem', had 'bad childhoods', or are just 'acting out' their own insecurities. As Simon points out, in cases of character disorders, these simply aren't true. The people engaging in such tactics know what they're doing, are perfectly fine with it, and will say anything to convince you they're not as bad as they seem. And as long as such behaviours aren't recognized and dealt with, nothing will stop them. Result? Just look at the amount of fraud and corruption in the financial industry. If they can get away with it, they will.

The book has chapters with very clear explanations of all the concepts, tactics, and disorders, as well as transcripts from some of Simon's own sessions. All are highly informative, simply written, and applicable to everything from teenagers to convicts. Highly recommended.

Outstanding book

This is a must-read for anyone going through any part of life with a person who is character disturbed. Understanding how your own behavior and weaknesses contribute to the situation is of paramount importance, and this book will help people understand how to change those behaviors. Getting inside a character-disturbed person's head is a little scary, but this, too is extremely important in order to effectively respond to them. The author knows his topic thoroughly. Great book!

Beware! Requires facilitator

I am fan of Morty Lefkoe programs, although this book demands to work with a facilitator to break the patterns using the Lefkoe Method for eliminating beliefs.
The booklet gives a possible and common minimal set of beliefs that might lead to emotional overeating, but no solutions are covered inside the material.
Besides intelectual comprehension I didn't get something else from the book.

Information that requires several counseling sessions

This short ebook describes the author's theories about how conditioning causes us to overeat when we want some kind of reward or pleasurable experience and wrongly believe that eating something, even when not hungry, is the way to get it. The principles seem sound, but the author himself says in the ebook that it takes several sessions of counselling for someone to accomplish this, and so this book is really just an advertisement for the author's counselling service. It is very unlikely that you will be able to stop overeating just by reading this book, and the author makes no such claim in the book itself.

So if you want to read an interesting theory about why you overeat, this is for you. If you want to stop overeating, this book won't be very helpful by itself.

James B. Patterson (born March 22, 1947) is an award-winning American author. Formerly an advertising executive for J. W. Thompson in the early 1990s, Patterson came up with the slogan "Toys R Us Kid". Shortly after his success with Along Came A Spider he retired from the firm and devoted his time to writing. The novels featuring his character, Alex Cross, a black forensic psychologist formerly of the Washington, D.C. Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, now working as a private psychologist and government consultant, are the most popular books among Patterson readers. James Patterson has been criticized by Stephen King, who called Patterson's books "dopey thrillers".[citation needed] Patterson shrugged off the comments, stating that he wants to be the "thrillingest thriller writer of all time".[citation needed] James Patterson has also been put as one of Forbes magazine's top 100 celebrities.

Black Market is "early" James Patterson

There are few books by James Patterson that I would give fewer than 5 stars. He always blows my mind. Black Market is good, but it takes time for even a great writer like Patterson to become a true master. This book was published in 1986. Patterson fans, like me, who love his books because he pulls absolutely no punches may be somewhat frustrated when he pulls the punches a little here. Also, Arch Carroll is an interesting and sympathetic character, but I don't feel the reader gets to get inside of him like you do with Alex Cross. I kept wanting to know this guy better; I even wanted to know the bad guy better, even if I wound up hating him, like Gary Soneji. In Black Market, the admittedly fascinating plot is king. In a world full of plot-masters, I love Patterson's books because the plots are great, but character is king. Black Market is certainly a book to read for Patterson fans, as long as they understand that it feels like at this point in his career he may have been still developing the fabulous style that makes him absolutely tops today.

A book that deserves a standing ovation!!

I know others out there may feel to disagree with me but having reading this book after the events of Spetember 11, it was totally shocking realizing that this book was written in 1986. There were terrorist activies back then & still America never saw the warning signs. I think this book try to display of what can happen and strongly enough, it did, in a totally different aspect. If I read this book before the events of September 11, I would of thought nothing like this can happen and this can be made into an entertaining made for TV or Hollywood movie. Now the events in this book seem terrifying because alot of lives were lost because of terrorist acts cause by a militia group called the Green Band. The main character Arch Carroll, I felt was well portrayed & totally fit the book. Instead of your mister nice guy do gooder, you had your rough around the edges detective. I feel this book is strongly entertaining!! The end caught me by surprise because it was totally unexpected. For those who were affected due to the events of September 11, I wouldn't recommened this book.

First things first - if you are at all familiar with the American economy, you'll have to suspend your sense of disbelief throughout the book. The premise has American terrorists bombing Wall Street and stealing 2 billion dollars worth of stock certificates in order to destroy the American economy and take down the entire free market system throughout the world. Now, it takes place in the 80s but still, even in the 80s, 2 billion dollars was just a drop in the bucket. It wouldn't make a bit of difference, especially since it was spread out over 20-30 giant conglomerates.

What makes the story work is the appealing main character, Arch Carrol. He is hardcore but still human and likeable. This is definitely not one of Patterson's best works, but it is not totally bad either.

great insight to public health in Australia

This was a very compelling story. My family suffered from neglect while I "had to" finish the book. It illuminates the sad but true journey through our Australian health system. Dr. Khadra is obviously an expert in this field and showed his observations from the other side and his admission of the pitfalls of bureaucratically run health-care systems.
I suggest anyone who wants to see both sides of public health systems look at this book. I bought three copies for family and friends.

Why buy some medical fiction, when you could be reading an outstanding book like this?

Khadra is probably the best author you've never heard of. His book is absolutely riveting! Sorry to stoop to triteness, but, I simply could not put it down.

While it is an account of socialized medicine in Australia (where I live), the locale is of minor import. This is a very personal history, spun out over months, of one man's struggle to overcome cancer. A case could be made that this is a good argument for, universal health care (and not a diatribe against socialized medicine).

Khadra is an accomplished medico, with a multi-ethnic background spanning several continents, and with additional degrees in computing and (I believe) business as well. It appears he retired as an M.D., to take up a writing career. However well-educated, he exudes warmth and compassion for the human side of medical suffering.

The author followed up this book with "Making the Cut", an account of "just what it takes to make a surgeon" (considerable humiliation by your peers, among other things). "Cut" is equally fascinating, from the perspective of a doctor (and not a patient). Well done, Dr. Khadra!

Finally, if I may inject a personal aside: Khadra's "Patient" first becomes aware of the onslaught of cancer, when he urinates with copious amounts of blood. Last week, I was horrified to find what appeared to be a dramatic amount of blood in my own urine. Could it be...!? Fortunately, a bit of googling helped me diagnose my own condition: eating an entire can of beets, was the culprit!

I loved this book. A bit confronting but couldnt put it down. A tell all tale that not everybody will want to hear. Definately worth reading.
