Gr 1-2--This is a terse, easy-to-read version of the classic tale. Sachi finds a sick crane, takes it home, and cares for it. When it flies away, a woman appears. She weaves silk for Sachi but asks that he not look at her when she is weaving. When the man breaks this promise, she turns back into a crane and flies away. The pedestrian narrative consists of simple sentences with few adjectives or adverbs to embellish the tale. The moral, "Always keep your promises," is tacked on at the end as an obvious lesson. As mundane as this retelling is, the illustrations are colorful and appealing. They consist of full-page drawings placed mainly on the right-hand page facing a paragraph of large-print text on the left. Even though a picture-book version of this folktale is not readily available, reading aloud the five-page story in Rafe Martin's Mysterious Tales of Japan (Putnam, 1996) would be a more satisfying way to appreciate this fine Japanese folktale than using this colorless retelling.

all of the williams sonoma kids cookbooks are awesome and this one does not disappoint! the recipes are super easy and delicious. it also includes breakfast lunch dinner and snacks as well as ideas for leftovers and other veriations of the recipes and even a "basics" recipe page at the end! love it love it love it

Okay, but not great. First recipe was a total failure.

My son opened on Christmas and made pancakes. The recipe called for 2 cups of milk to 1.5 cups of flour. I've made a lot of pancakes in my life - this seemed a bit off, but hey, it's Williams & Sonoma.

What a disaster! Runny, goopy, horrible mess. Clearly this is a misprint.

I may come back after some more recipes are attempted to revise this review.

On the positive side, the format of the book is nice and the instructions are good for a 10 year old.

My kids love this book

My 8.5 yr old daughter loves this book and has gotten her 11 yr old competitive brother interested in cooking as well. They have made many recipes from the book and most have come out great. I'm usually there to give her some assistance but she makes them on her own. The directions are pretty easy to follow and there are pictures of each recipe.

NURSING STUDENTS

Now this book help me get to bed by 10 during clinicals in Med-Surg. This book has scientific rationales and about every disorder that you can think of. If you are in Med-Surg and need scientific rationales for you care plan try this book. I brought about 3 other care plan books that I couldn't use because the rationales were not scientific enough.. So if you want to get to bed early...Purchase this book.

THE MEDICAL-SURGICAL BOOK HELPED ME WRITE PLANS OF CARE BETTER THEN ANY OTHER BOOK THAT I HAD, IT LETS YOU LOOK UP THE MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS AND THEN IT GIVES YOU ALL THE PLANS OF CARE THAT GOES ALONG WITH IT. IT IS WONDERFUL.

Good book, but feels outdated, some incorrect / inconsistent info, unnecessary metaphysical rants, horrible kindle font

+4 stars for the food combining info. There is a lot of interesting info in this book that seems mostly in line with other research. However there seems to be some misinformation, for example, Broccoli is repeatedly categorized as a starchy vegetable. Every other food combining resource considers broccoli a non-starchy vegetable. I feel like I have to double check everything, because there are some things that are inconsistent with all the other stuff I've read.

+1 star for good information on other topics related to digestion, like GERD / acid reflux, etc.

-1 star due to the font in the kindle edition, it's an absolutely HORRIBLE serif typeface that is really hard on the eyes.

-1 star because the author goes on some unnecessary rants/asides, including some rather metaphysical beliefs like "saying grace/thanks for your food", food affects you on a "vibrational" level, etc. I bought the book to learn about food combining, so this stuff just feels unnecessary and I find myself skipping quite a bit of this stuff.

It's a small book with some basic quick info. I also found that the book comes off as if digesting is extremely tiresome to our body in a fear mongering manner. Some information I find completely pointless & made me lose credit for the author. Especially Page 101 Digestive Wisdom.

It's a waste of about 8 pages. Probably made to humor his fans & feed his racism to meat consumption. He makes a very dumb statement to defend his vegetarian dogma. Pg 106: "Go to a zoo. Look at the animals. The carnivores are prowling & growling. They are restless & angry. Now look at the sheep,cows,horses & elephants. They sit in peace & eat from your hand."

This is flaw & weak statement made by the author. The herbivore animals he mentioned are all domesticated & have been for years. I would love to see the author try to feed a wild hippo from his hand or a bull. Also my dog is a carnivore, he gladly eats from my hand & is at peace for about 16hours of the day. The rest of the day, he wants to play.

There is another statement on page 107 " You can eat half a potato,put the other half back in the ground & you'll get more potatoes. Try this with a piece of meat & see what you get."

This is another blockhead statement. Potatoes are stem tubers. Which is supposed to reproduce. That potato comment can be argued with pretty much any other fruit or vegetable, but he fiercely choose meat.

After reading those short sighted statements I lost all respect for the author & his works. He lacks basic knowledge of zoo animals & tubers. I bought this book to understand food combining & digesting. Not for it's dull vegetarian agenda.

About the Author
Dr. Steven Vago was born in Debrecen, Hungary in 1937. He was a brilliant student and athlete, and at the age of only 19, he became one of the legendary Hungarian Freedom Fighters during the 1956 uprising and revolution. He escaped to Austria just prior to the closing of the border between Hungary and Austria by the Soviet Army. He made his way across Europe and eventually to the United States. Vago matriculated from the University of Alabama where he received his B. A. in Sociology. Upon graduation, Vago furthered his graduate education at Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned two Ph. Ds: one in Sociology and one in Anthropology. During graduate school he was an integral part of the creation of an alcohol treatment program at Malcolm Bliss Hospital in St. Louis. Steven became part of the Department of Sociology at St. Louis University after finishing his graduate studies, and was a full professor there by the age of 37. Thereafter, he chaired the Department of Sociology several times, teaching at St. Louis University for over 30 years. During the 1970's, Steve was asked by the United Nations to work for its member agency UNESCO, and worked in Paris for several years in their Office of Population and Demography. During the years of Steve's involvement in the field of Sociology, he was frequently asked, by universities throughout the United States and Canada, to participate in a variety of discussions addressing the legal and social changes occurring in the former Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellites. In 1975, he met and married Kathe Hartley, a St. Louis on-air reporter working for the CBS-owned KMOX Radio in St. Louis. At the end of his teaching career in 2001, Steven and Kathe retired to Bellingham, Washington. Vago passed away in 2010, at the age of 73.

A job well done

This is an excellent textbook. The language is clear, the ideas well exposed, and the subject covered in a most satisfactory manner. The sixth edition I have read contains an extensive and very useful bibliography. I'd recommend it whoheartedly for undergraduate courses on the topic. Some minor criticisms: first, I would have liked the section on theoretical perspectives to be more extensive, while the chapter on methods seems to me to be superflous, at least for undergraduates. Second, at the bottom of page 232, the information give is confusing. It talks about tons, without specifying whether metric or not. Further, it uses ounces, pounds and kilos, all very unclear. Thirdly, the sections on the socialist system are obsolete, insofar as those systems have practically disappeared. And, yes, although the author claims, at the bottom of p.1 that he has followed an eclectic apporach, "without embracing or advocating a particular position, ideology, or theoretical stance", the truth is that I feel I detect a very subtle but, nonetheless recognizable, "leftish" leaning. But those are minor shortcomings, whcih shrink to nothing in comparison with the very positive achievements of the textbook. Kudos!

Good Beginer's guide

The book is well written and researched but is very preliminary and recommended for beginers. Its a great starter book to those who are not familiar but are interested in the law from a sociological perspective. The author writes well and has thorough research and provides references for further information but can be somewhat repetitive.

ONLY FOR THE SERIOUS PLAYER.

This book is for a serious player who aspires to get beyond FIDE ELO 2000.If your aspirations are lower than that you only need to have 100 Endgames You Must Know: Vital Lessons for Every Chess Player 100 Endgames You Must Know, Endgame Challenge, Chess Endgame Trainingand Endgame Tactics: A Comprehensive Guide to the Sunny Side of Chess Endgames.
70 per cent of the positions in the book will not be seen in other books and most positions border between the calculable and incalculable (truly strategic rather than tactical). I was not able to agree fully with some of the solutions, though the strategy suggested would give the best practical chance against a human player and I can say with some degree of certainty that I would not be able to win some of the positions against a stronger player or computer even with sufficient study of the book.
A few of the positions are basic theoretical endgames given in most endgame books and these account for less than 30 per cent.
A club player studying this book may get an understanding of a player of FIDE ELO 2400 and this work is not as taxing as the other endgame strategy books besides it contains 500 explanatory positions and 240 test positions which number is excellent for a book of this size. Though I did not pay much attention to the prose I would say that readers will not experience any difficulty with it.
This book is in a class of its own with regard to the sort of positions it gives but is only for those who would want to go very high in chess.
If you are not aspiring to chess greatness, you should skip this book. If like me you love good endgame books than this book will be a welcome addition to your library.

Right up there with the best end game classics.

Quite a good book which comes close to the current frontrunners of endgame strategy (i.e. Karsten M�ller “How to play chess endgames”). The style of writing is lively and as a result never makes endgames seem dry or boring, which is something they are often seen as. A very fine book I liked working with! Looking forward seeing more being published by J. Hellsten!

Format is worthless.

Why do people put diagrams into books that don't indicate which side is to move? As far as I am concerned books that require you to look at the answer to determine the question are a waste of time. I wish I could get my wasted money back.

A Fun Read for Children and Gnome Lovers

Planet of the Lawn Gnomes is an interesting read with many twists and turns I didn't see coming. It takes a long time for the story to get going but once it does, the wait is worth it. It's humorous and slightly scary, but never too much. At times some of the protagonist's actions may seem far fetched but hang on because they will all make sense in the end. I would recommend this book to children and anyone interested in a creative tale about gnomes. You may however, find the narration slightly cliched if you're used to more adult fiction.

R.L. Stine is STILL Inspiring!

When I was a tween, I loved Goosebumps. I read them whenever I could, and I just thought R.L. Stine was the best author ever. His plotlines were just crazy enough to entice and glue my middle school self to the pages, and I liked that they were a little bit scary with a little touch of chill, though they never gave me nightmares. And the covers, with the ooze? I loved them. I loved to touch them and I had a small collection on my bookshelf... at one point I actually planned to begin with book 1 and eventually own them all--a feat that never did happen as, you know, middle schoolers can quickly be overcome by some new phenomena and forget all about their previous loves, which is what happened with Goosebumps.

But, nearly 20 years later, I came across a new release from R.L. Stine on Netgalley, and I just had to read it... I wanted to know if the novels still held as much appeal to me as they once did. The verdict? Well, no, not really--my logical side whispered to me throughout my reading of this novel, telling me just how ridiculous the plot really was, and I was thinking to myself that it's such a shame that I've changed so much. And then... the ending happened. That's right. The ending threw me out into left field and I was like, "whoa." R.L. Stine's still got it! And I'd give these books to any MG/tween out there looking for something a little weird, a little scary, and something that'll definitely make them think, and wish the novel kept right on going. So, while I'll admit that R.L. Stine's books don't appeal to me like they once did, because I'm not a tween anymore, R.L. Stine hasn't changed a bit, and his books are still awesome, and I have to give this novel four stars because the twist at the end really was "kick butt." This novel is definitely a winner.

Fun read!

Young and old alike will enjoy this new series. Scary, creepy and suspenseful it will leave you wondering who else will turn up on R.L. Stine's Most Wanted list.

This was my first time reading a Goosebumps book. My youngest son has read every single one and now I know why he has loved them so much.
The author intro is fantastic and really catches your attention. The author talking directly to the reader is a smart way of making the story seem like something meant just for you.

Even though it's children's fiction, I found, as an adult, I really enjoyed this book. It contained lots of twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. The pace and momentum quickened, the suspense and mystery building, as the story continued. It's rare to read a book where the ending is a complete surprise.

Here's what my 13-year-old son had to say about it:

I really like the main character, Jay. He was very curious and always looking for adventure. The most interesting characters were the Lawn Gnomes. They were totally creepy and mean and their true nature was unexpected. My favorite part of the book was the ending. Very suspenseful! I liked how the book ended with a cliffhanger. I like that you can read these books quickly. I would rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

some interesting stories

After reading the book I found some interesting stories and some things that are true and I already know but I didn't find any practical approach or techniques on transforming lust into love.all in all I can't say it stood up to my expectations regarding the subject.there was too much emphasis on theory and around the subject.on the other hand unless you practice yoga I can't see how to transform lust into love which requires an uplifting of consciousness. But since that is the subject of a book then at least it should focus more on that.I can't say I am any wiser regarding the subject after reading it.lastly the only technique inside the book is a form of meditation which I haven't tried to have an opinion on its efficiency.
